Wando, winner of the Canadian Triple Crown and standing in Canada, has died at age 14, reports DRF. Suspected "heart attack."

He sired Turallure, among others, who we lost last year.

That makes me super sad. He was a character and always a pleasure to visit when he was at Lane's End.

National Assembly (Danzig - Renounce by Buckpasser), a prominent sire in South Africa, has died at age 30.

His last foal crop was born in 2010 -- and out of that came the highly talented Soft Falling Rain, who was champion 2yo colt in SAF in 2012, and won the Godolphin Mile and the UAE 2000 Guineas last year.

RIP Wando. That sucks. He was so exciting when he ran.
I worked with one of his best offspring, she was a nut. Nothing like him at all!

To second_glance: Thank you for that beautiful picture of Tiger Ridge. Wishes will never make it so, but I wish he had stayed here at stud, and wish he had lived longer. Sigh.

To tachyon: Thank you for the news about Rodrigo being pensioned. It's very welcome news. Please forgive me for mentioning this, but a part of me will always cringe when I hear about horses in Japan who aren't paying their way anymore. This is because of what happened to Ferdinand. I saw him run a number of times here in Southern California. So seeing Rodrigo pensioned does my heart good.

Just read on Paca Paca Farms twitter that Afleet passed away yesterday at the age of 30.. RIP so many stud are passing away this month kind of breaking my heart.. Especially when horses I worked with die..

At least Afleet and National Assembly both lived to 30...it's all the stallions we've been losing in their teens, like Wando, Silver Train and Rockport Harbor, or even younger, like Summer Bird and St. Nick, that really hurts.

He was a great Canadian with a distinguished racing career and stallion career. He was unlucky to have run into the mighty Gulch at 4.

Absolutely nuts. 6 starts, retired January of his 3yo year. Why now? And I thought after their 3yo season was bad, lol. At least Kantharos and Run Away and Hide were injured. What excuse does Corfu have? I'm not knocking his potential as a stallion, I just think it's a shame. On his best day, he was fast and could've been a force in the Sprint division this year.

He's almost certainly injured. They may not have specifically stated it, but why else would he be retiring now? They want stallions they can stand for big fees in KY and Ireland, not $3500 in FL.

ITA. He had a fast work on 1/26 at PMM -- I'm guessing he came out of that with something pretty wrong.

I wouldn't disagree with you, but it's been 4 days since his work. There's a good deal in a great regional market, for a decent stud fee? All in four or five days? I thought this stuff takes time. And why be so hush-hush about a possible injury? With social media, it's going to get out anyway. If it was my mare I'm breeding, I'd want to know. We don't even know if Corfu was an unsound horse or not.
