Looks like a lot of mares that previously went War Front, were sent to Wootton instead.

Does anyone know who Ancient Rome’s dam (Gagnoa (IRE) was bred to for 2020 & 2021?

Coolmore really hasn't used War Front since around the time Justify went to stud and coincidentally the answer to your question is......

2020 - c. by Justify
2021 - f. by Justify

Far too many to list, but the article is worth a read. Galileo only covered 45 mares, most of which were subsequently covered by other stallions
Wow, only 36 mares for Gleneagles.
That surprised me and also didn’t. Coolmore stallions can drop off dramatically if they don’t hit it big, which many don’t due to the unflinching support Galileo got. Gleneagles actually has had a really decent year though on the track, I wonder if they’ll keep him around for 2022 and if his book will get a bump.

Not gonna lie tho, I always confuse him and Churchill. Same way I always confuse Air Force Blue and US Navy Flag.

Yeah, 20 is an unusually small number for a Shadai's new recruit from abroad.
I was surprised, too, even if I hadn't expected a big number for Siskin, anyway.
As I wrote before below, I wonder if Shadai misjudged the market when they set his stud fee.

viewtopic.php?p=237707#p237707

Shadai has not provided with any official comment on his small number yet.
But there are some rumors on the Japanese board that Siskin had a minor accident during the breeding season, had to suspend his duty and may restart next season.
We will see the truth later.

Declaration of War has done well in Japan and maybe people like the way the products of The Factor’s one year abroad have turned out so being a son of War Front may be a hot commodity in Japan at moment. I think Air Force Blue had a winner on JRA as well.

Japanese breeders in recent years seem to be targeting our more speed-oriented stallion pedigrees.

Given the relatively mediocre sales reception to Mendelssohn, I'm predicting that Coolmore will sell him within the next 2-3 years to them.

I wonder if they will consider importing a Kitten's Joy eventually. I mean, they have Noble Mission now....

They aren't using Hawksbill much as far as Kitten's Joys go. I would guess they keep looking to Storm Cat lines as these seem to do best with the Sunday Silence/Deep Impact mares their fields are full of. Which I think is one explanation for the Japanese going all in on Justify.

I agree with what CorridorZ75 wrote.
War Front, as a stallion, seems to have many characteristics Japanese breeders wish for --- speed, precociousness, versatility and pedigree.
And he has been proven as a wonderful sire of sires, too.
Japan introduced three War Front sons American Patriot (2018 -) , The Factor (2018 only on one-year lease) and Declaration of War (2019 -).
It's still not easy to explain the huge jump of American Patriot from 2020 to 2021.
But I guess that Japanese breeders were influenced mainly by Declaration of War's success which became more evident prior to 2021 breeding season.
I haven't had the number of mares bred covered by JBBA stallions for this year yet.
But I'm sure that we will see a large number for Declaration of War (standing at JBBA), too.

Talismanic numbers of mares covered:

2019: 113
2020: 103
2021: 37

I wonder if he is experiencing a ''3rd crop jinx'' now.
It won't be easy for a turf stayer to remain popular at stud every year.
Let's hope he will recover from the slump after his offspring make their debuts!! ;)

It will definitely be VERY interesting to see how many mares Declaration of War got this year. His US crops continue to do well on the track.

For a stallion standing for a $35,000 fee, he's not doing terrible sales wise. He's had yearlings sell for $900,000, $750,000, $510,000 etc
His overall average at Keeneland Sept was $160,000 with 93 registered, and 64 yearlings sold bloating the sale and likely hurting his overall average.
I think it would not be wise of them to skip off on a half to Into Mischief that quickly.

I agree with you in theory. As a half to Into Mischief and by a dominant deceased stallion, they should keep him awhile at least.

But then, they sold Declaration of War right after his first runners hit. And they now have more Scat Daddys than I think they want to keep: No Nay Never, Justify, Sioux Nation and Caravaggio.

They probably can't sell Justify based on price and Tripe Crown winner status. So that leaves Caravaggio, Sioux Nation, and Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn off pedigree alone will probably get them the most. That's my bet based on the fact they shipped Caravaggio here pretty fast.

I think they shipped Caravaggio over here because they had Sioux Nation, No Nay Never and 2 sons of No Nay Never(Arizona and Ten Sovereigns) in Ireland. The Scat Daddy's they have in the US have been immensely popular, both covering 250 mares a year, so bringing in another makes sense, especially when there is no reason that his foals shouldn't run on the dirt too. Plus as crazy as it may seem, because US trainers complain about 3yos going 10f in May, he had a recent winner at 10f as a 2yo.
