Not everyone follows international racing. I follow Canadian racing, coast-to-coast, and American racing. I watch to see who won the big races in Ireland, France, Australia, Germany, and Japan, but there are so many countries with so much racing, how can anyone follow it closely? Unless it's their job?

I sure appreciate Lord Kanaloa, but I'm afraid one reason why his US fan base isn't as big as it should be is that it's hard for many of us to watch live racing from the other side of the globe.
TVG shows Japanese racing on Saturday nights, but it comes on pretty late for East Coast folks. TVG used to show more Aussie racing, but their coverage has been hit-and-miss lately. And I've never seen Hong Kong racing, although I think TVG had racing from Sha Tin when the network first got rolling 12-13 years ago.
Yes, I know races are available if you go hunting on YouTube, but those are lo-res replays. It's not quite the same as seeing races live on a big wide-screen TV. ;)
Seeing (and maybe wagering on) live races is much more likely to build a fan base for the horses in foreign races. Reading about the races the next day is sort of impersonal.

The only time I really watched Hong Kong racing was when Silent Witness was still running. He was so amazing.

I'm pretty sure TVG is showing Japanese racing Saturday night, so those of us who can stay up will be able to watch these well-bred youngsters.

Another 2yo colt, who was excluded from the 2yo G1 race, equally caught the attention of racing fans this weekend.

Mikki Isle, out of Star Isle (IRE) (Rock of Gibraltar), was instead entered in an allowance race, Hiiragi Sho, at Nakayama, 1600m, on Saturday. He just broke his maiden at Kyoto, 1600m, on 2 Nov, clocking a record of 1 min 32.3 sec (wire to wire).

This time, he won (again wire to wire) with 1:34:2, which was 0.5sec faster than the 2yo G1 on Sunday, and the finishing time was on a par with the ones for1600m older horses at Nakayama on Saturday and Sunday. With his interesting racing style, he may be another 2yo to watch closely.

Has Wind In Her Hair been retired from breeding or is she still active? She is turning 23 in 2014.

Yes, she has. Her last is a yearling filly by King Kamehameha.

The G3 Radio Nikkei Hai 2yo stakes was won by One and Only(JPN), 2011C. Heart's Cry(JPN) x Virtue(JPN) by Taiki Shuttle(USA).
The winner's family caught my eye:
his fifth dam is GREAT Courtly Dee(USA)
and his thrid dam Ambrosine(USA) is the dam of the classic winner No Reason(JPN)(pensioned) and Great Journey(JPN)(stallion in France).
Introduced to Japan by Koji Maeda's North Hills in 1996, ex-Darley mare Ambrosine(USA) had a major impact to Japanese breeding.
One and Only(JPN) is a regally-bred horse, too.

The line breeding to Halo is interesting in this pedigree. Do you know if Halo's vicious temperament is being passed down through three and more generations? His son, Devil's Bag, supposedly was also nasty, but while Sunday could be aggressive, he wasn't vicious to the best of my knowledge.

I do believe the fact that Sunday was a son of Halo is one of the main reasons why U.S. breeders didn't support him. Plus Wishing Well, Sunday's dam, was not fashionably bred. In tail female, you have to go all the way back to Bell Mere, a full sister to the important stallion Beau Bere, and their dam, Cinna, before finding top level racehorses from this family.

Despite his temperament, Halo was a successful sire with a high-quality pedigree. He was by the excellent Hail to Reason, an important stamina influence, and Halo was a half-brother to the great racemare, Tosmah. Their dam, Cosmah, was a half-sister to Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer.

Lord Kanaloa(JPN) has been named Japan's Horse of the Year 2013.

Congratulations!!!
He has become the first sprint specialist (even if he also won the Yasuda Kinen at a mile) to win the highest honor. (Taiki Shuttle, the HOTY 1998, was a sprinter/miler)

Mikki Isle, 3yo colt out of Star Isle, won Shinzan Kinen (G3, 1600m) at Kyoto with a race record today. The trainer says he wouldn't be pointed to the classic races in the spring. Instead, the NHK mile cup (G1) would be his main target.

I have noticed that Japanese breeders purchased a lot of Unusual Heat fillies and mares over the past few years. Looks like the Japanese, at least, have an appreciation for that stallion, even if most Kentucky-based breeding operations have snubbed him over the years, dismissing him as merely a breeder of good Cal-breds. Hmph.

Kate Hunter had a nice article in California Thoroughbred in 2012 (with great pics) that mentioned that the Japanese liked the idea of bringing Unusual Heat into their breeding programs.
