I've noticed that Breyer doesn't create new body molds very often for their model horses. :P Whose body do you think they used for Justify?
I know sculpting and casting a new mold is a little expensive, but some of their choices can make me  .
I love the black Appy/Draft pony, Harley, and was tickled that he got his own Breyer model, but...they used the Gypsy King mold. Don't get me wrong, that's a very pretty Gypsy Horse, but his build is WAY too light to look like Harley. From what I understand, Harley weighs in at 2,000 - 2,300 lbs. and about 17.2 hands. His butt is so wide he should be followed by a "WIDE LOAD" warning sign.

They used the Carrick or Walking Thoroughbred mold. The same mold that was used for Brass Hat. I heard before it was maybe $30,000 for them to make new molds but I believe they do release at least one every year.

If he wasn't getting support in KY at 3500$ as a Derby winner, the move makes sense.
He was standing in Kentucky for $7,500. I feel like a lot of Calumet's stallions are overpriced though.
Because they are. They've gotten more reasonable with each passing year, but still don't really reflect the market.
Most of the time by the time they decide to reduce them to where the stallion would actually be viable and used, they are sent elsewhere.

They actually put out 3 new Traditional sized models a year, via the Premiere Club (which you have to be a paid member of, and buy all 3 releases). Those new models do get put into the regular rotation, but they follow a general pattern. 1st as the new Premiere Club model, then often as a OOAK Breyerfest release. They may come out as a limited Collector's Club horse after that, and eventually onto a regular run.
Carrick (the Justify mold) came out in 2013 so it's relatively new. I think of the available molds, it fit him the best body type wise.

I agree, the Lonesome Glory could've fit as well but since they just re-released the original Lonesome Glory, two chestnuts on the same mold might have been a bit much lol!

I also like the Cigar mold for Chrome.

And the Ruffian is my favourite thoroughbred mold so I'm glad they used it for Pharoah, but since they modified the tail, I wish they'd modified the ears too. The pinned ears doesn't suit him at all given he was known to prick his ears while running.

They've said in the past that it typically cost around $50,000 to generate a new mold - but that was maybe ten years ago and in the meantime they figured out how to source new molds from model horse hobby artists (who sculpt their own original models & cast them in resin and/or china and sell directly to customers or via companies like Horsing Around in the UK) along with, and/or instead of, "traditional" sculptors/artists - which obvs saves them a significant amount.

They really should've gone with the original (vintage) traditional "bubble butt" Belgian for Harley, tho. But then again I thought they should've released Pharoah on Carrick...

Not necessarily “news”, but the BH Stallion Register lists Keen Ice as being “booked full for 2018”. Wonder how big his book was. I expected him to be popular because “Curlin son defeated TC winner”.

Calumet has hundreds of mares. They could probably have filled his book themselves, had they been so inclined. I don't know what constitutes "full" there, either. 80 mares? 100? 120?

Didn't realize they had that many now. I still expected him to be popular amongst outsiders.

Is there a way where you can see how many mares in a stallion's book were from their home farm vs outside?

Not unless you had access to the names of every mare he bred and you could look up whether or not the mare was owned by Calumet.

Speaking of Keen Ice, I found this on Facebook recently. Apparently, Calumet has a (halfway) active Facebook page.

He has that "puppy dog" look.

Unbeaten Triple Crown Hero Justify to Coolmore America
The long-anticipated deal between the owners of Justify (Scat Daddy–Stage Magic, by Ghostzapper) and Coolmore America regarding the unbeaten Triple Crown winner’s stallion career is being finalized, WinStar Farm announced Friday afternoon.

“After much deliberation with all the partners, we’ve decided to accept Coolmore’s offer to stand Justify,” said Elliott Walden, president, CEO and racing manager of WinStar Farm. “As you can imagine, this is a bittersweet moment for all of us connected to this special horse who gave us the ultimate thrill of a lifetime. We believe strongly in Justify as a stallion and the ownership group has retained breeding rights. We look forward to supporting him at Ashford Stud.”

Campaigned by WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, and Starlight Racing and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Justify was retired in late July with a perfect six-for-six record and earnings of $3,798,000.

Yeah, I'm not that big a fan of Pharoah on the Ruffian mold. It just doesn't "suit" him, y'know? Or at least that's how I feel. I much would've preferred Carrick or maybe even the Lonesome Glory mold.

As for Harley, I would've done a modified version of Wixom.
