Do TB breeders ever do DNA testing on a foal's hair to find out what their color really is?

I would assume most breeders would view it as an unnecessary expense and move on.
Just register "dkb" or maybe "blk/br" and move on seems to be the M.O. I've seen examples of foals who were very obviously black from birth get registered as just "bay" sometimes.
Now Bubby here seems to be very obviously dkb, at least IMO.

I'm under the impression that most of these colors exist simply to provide a physical description, not the exact alleles of each horse.Retrospectiv wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 4:51 pmI don't have an answer to which ones, but the combined terms are as foolish as them using grey/roan as a registration option.Falinadin wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 1:46 pm Genuine question, which countries use the 'blk/brn' descriptor in their registers? I've never seen a 'blk/brn' in the US, at least not in the past 50 years, typically they are black or dkb/b (dark bay/brown). To me the above horse would be dkb/b if it were in the US.
A horse can't be both black and 'brown', and technically there is no brown, they are dark bay. If course, most registries are not particularly accruate at registering colours...
But yeah, I wish they'd get rid of "roan" and just say "grey".

I agree. I think it's a holdover from the past, before the difference between roan and grey was as recognized as it is now. Back in the 50s and earlier there were horses just registered as "roan". I think as science progressed and people realized that grey and roan are not the same, it got changed to grey/roan. I think we should just make the jump to grey now

Cougar (Deep Impact x Promise to be True) broke his maiden recently in his fifth start. He is one of two things:
1. Black with a bit of sun bleaching
2. As close to black as you can be while not really being black

I notice on Racing Post his color is listed as "bb" instead of just "b."

That is a gorgeous horse. <3
I've often thought that Japanese breeders must love black horses. Sunday Silence, Roses In May, War Emblem, Shanghai Bobby and other black/nearly black imports have given Japanese fields more black runners than I see anywhere else. Love it.
