Lord Nelson to miss 2017 breeding season
http://www.spendthriftfarm.com/articles ... eason.htmlSpendthrift Farm’s Lord Nelson, the three-time Grade 1 winner and 2016 Eclipse finalist for Champion Sprinter, has contracted Laminitis which will cause him to miss the 2017 breeding season, the farm announced late Friday.
“Lord Nelson has developed Laminitis, secondary to the infection in his right foreleg that caused him to scratch out of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift General Manager. “It’s a new setback, but we are cautiously optimistic about his prognosis. With that said, we understand the seriousness of this disease.
“Mr. Hughes is committed to always doing what’s best for the horse, and that means Lord Nelson will be withheld from breeding mares this season. Our team has notified all of the breeders from his full book, and our focus is now 100% on bringing him back to good health. We very much appreciate the breeders for their understanding,” he added.

Ah crap.
He's a beautiful horse with a ton of talent, so I hope he follows in Lady Eli's steps and recovers completely.
ETA: There aren't going to be any more Pulpits, so such a high quality son is pretty precious. REALLY hope he recovers.

Despite the headline, Nicole talks about a number of new stallions in the article.

With Classic Empire's win as 2yo champion male Pioneer of the Nile becomes the only stallion in the last 20 years to sire two Eclipse champion 2yo males and one of only 4 stallions overall to sire more than one Eclipse Champion 2yo male. (None have sired more than two, the other three are What A Pleasure,
Mr. prospector, Seattle Slew).

I was actually quite surprised when I realized Tapit only had one Champion 2yo male to his name lol.sweettalk wrote:PotN continues to make a nice little name for himself in tapit's shadow, eh?
Someone also threw some interesting numbers at me earlier on:
In 2016, he sired a 2YO champion from only 46 2YO runners (comparing Uncle Mo with 73 runners in 2015 when siring a 2YO champion). In 2014, he sired a 2YO champion from only 27 2YO runners (he had 35 and 23 2YO runners in 2013 and 2015).
I mean it would be pretty impressive regardless, but out of only 4 crops and such small numbers it's very interesting.

Keen Ice to Calumet Upon Retirement
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... ium=social"We are excited to have Keen Ice headed to legendary Calumet Farm," said Jerry Crawford, president of Donegal Racing. "We are equally excited that our agreement allows Keen Ice to race through 2017. Racing needs more horses that will stay on the track before retiring to the breeding shed and Calumet should be saluted for making that happen."

57 black-type horses under his first three dams...
The 9-year-old stallion is the product of an outstanding female family cultivated by perennial leading New York breeder Albert Fried Jr. Beautyinthepulpit's dam, grade 2 winner Stolen Beauty (by Deputy Minister), also produced stakes winner Moonlightandbeauty—the dam of grade 3 winner Giant Moon and leading New York-bred sprinter Moonlight Song—and stakes-placed winner Stolen Thunder. Among the 57 black-type horses under Beautyinthepulpit's first three dams are Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Exaggerator, Canadian champion Eternal Search, and graded stakes-winning sires Niigon, Finality, and Jiggs Coz.
