Sadly true. :(

We also lost his great sire, Montjeu, in 2012 at only 16.

How awful! Hard to guess what's behind "...passed away due to complications during a planned routine operation," but there are risks in even seemingly minor procedures. Another loss for the Montjeu line.

This is a long article but there are some interesting tidbits in it.

Pharoah's first book full of global glamour mares
AN IMPRESSIVE number of the world's foremost breeders joined in sending some of the best broodmares on the globe to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in his first season at stud, including a dozen that either won European Group 1 races or produced Group 1 winners.

Of the 208 mares in American Pharoah's first book, 55 mares (or 26 per cent) were either Grade/Group 1 winners or dams of elite winners, according to data supplied by the American Jockey Club and Coolmore, which stands the son of Pioneerof the Nile at its Ashford Stud near Lexington. Many more are half-sisters or daughters of top performers.

So much for Guillot's dreams of Pegasus glory.
Besides Nyquist, is Loaban one of the first Uncle Mo's to go to stud?

I think Outwork beat both to the punch. They'll all be standing in 2017 but Outwork has been retired for a few months.

It is literally raining Uncle Mo's. Get them while he's hot. Laoban had 1 win in 9 starts, and retires with a soft tissue injury. I'm going out on a limb and saying Uncle Mo isn't passing along soundness with the 'brilliance'.

What happened to Outwork?
Nyquist - spent time getting shock therapy at 2. He went backwards real fast after his Derby win, did he retire sound, truthfully?

He looked pretty sound in that video Darley posted of him ripping around his paddock.

Sound for racing, sound for turn-out - very different. Look at some of the banged up horses up for adoption that get turn-out. My friends mare has 2 bows and she runs around like an idiot.
Your saying O'Neill retired a perfectly sound champion before the Classic? He loves having his horses in over their heads in Breeders Cup - Ralis and Land Over Sea can attest to that.

Discreet Cat, winner of the famous G1 Cigar Mile and already the sire of six G1 horses (three of whom have won at the highest level), will stand as a Darley stallion in Japan for the forthcoming breeding season.

Discreet Cat could do good in Japan where, to the best of my knowledge, there are not many Storm Cat line stallions. Perhaps he might actually cross better with some Japanese lines than those available in the U.S.

I'll just say that exactly 1 week after he arrived at Darley, there was no sign of the "puffy ankle" or any visible lameness. He looked tired and like he needed to gain 150 lbs, but he didn't look unsound.

There will always be a difference between a horse sound enough to train and race and one that is not.

Remember how we were discussing Turkoman and how well he was doing at 34? The majestic, grand old gent has been laid to rest Dec 21.
2016 is really hellbent on sucking out as much life as it possibly can until the very end.

well, so far, between rachel and zen, i wouldn't breed to the boys of either of them. zen's can't outrun a hibernating turtle (tho her tapit isn't quite as sluggish as her other), and rachel's couldn't stay together to race more than once.

i guess we'll see how it goes in the shed, but...
