Photo Call , Mondaliste and The United States also come to mind as recent G1Ws (I believe The United Stakes was an O'Brien trained first though). The very obvious one is Frankel. I think Coolmore makes it a priority to buy as many of the top ones they see though (if they didn't breed them).

Considering how good Dubawi is proving to be, Japan has really scored by acquiring Makfi, IMO.

Toormore, along with Buratino and Bow Creek, will stand as part of the Darley Club (a 'Breed Secure' kind of deal)Mel Mae wrote:Toormore has been retired and will stand at Dalham Hall. He was a cool, hardknocking stakes horse and should provide a decent outcrossish (still has Northern Dancer fairly close up but his sire is Arakan) pedigree for Europe.

Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Creator retires, sold to JBBA
More: http://www.winstarfarm.com/articles/bel ... -jbba.htmlCreator, the 3-year-old colt by Tapit who captured this year’s Belmont Stakes (G1) and Arkansas Derby (G1), has been sold by WinStar Farm and Bobby Flay to the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association (JBBA), which intends to retire him from racing to stand stud at Shizunai Stallion Station in Hokkaido, Japan for 2017.

Let's just say my media friends who have to cover it and cover Keeneland opening day tomorrow + Fall Stars Saturday/Sun are not thrilled right now.Sparrow Castle wrote:Yep, it certainly is a late night news dump for folks in the EDT time zone.Mel Mae wrote:They must be working on Japan time with the time that press release came out ...

It seems a sudden move, but maybe the Japanese breeders who were here for the Keeneland sales wanted to finalize this deal before returning home?
The decision to immediately retire him seems odd, since the Japanese are known for racing their stallions well beyond their sophomore seasons. It makes me wonder if Creator has developed some niggling issues that would interfere with returning to a G1 level racing ability. His last race wasn't exactly inspiring.

The comments after that article have the usual 'oh no, he'll never see America again,' or 'I hope he'll be safe' stuff.
I'm pretty sure that he'll see far better mares in Japan than he would have here, where we have more than one or two sons of Tapit at stud.

My favorite of comments like that are always the people who say something like "Look at what we missed out on when we sent Sunday Silence there!" First, just like all great stallions he's the exception, not the rule 2) He got so much more support there than he would have gotten here, that's a big part of why he did what he did. Those same people usually throw in a Ferdinand reference and even sometimes blame Japan for Exceller just to really dig their "point" home. Gotta love all the commenters who show up on the "sold" stories.

I thought I'd do a little digging to see just how many sons of Tapit we have standing in the US ATM, and just naming the graded stakes winners, we have:
Concord Point, Trappe Shot, Tapizar, Constitution, Flashback, Race Day, Tapiture, Tonalist, Normandy Invasion and Bandbox (G3 counts). And we HAD Hansen. (Did I miss anyone?)
We are likely to see Mohaymen added to this list soon. I know he was supposed to just be getting time off before next year, but I haz doubts about him coming back.
I think we have enough Tapits to go around, so I wish Creator a fond bon voyage.

Creator wasn't any good, so why would anybody complain about not being able to breed to him? Or otherwise care? I've been saying for awhile none of the sons of Tapit have proven much as stallions yet. So, Creator getting sold to Japan (instead of the Japanese buying one of the already existing Tapit stallions) is something Winstar is lucky to find. And Flay too, because that was turning into a pretty expensive walk to the winner's circle in the Belmont. eh...maybe it was worth it.....because I wouldn't know.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:I thought I'd do a little digging to see just how many sons of Tapit we have standing in the US ATM, and just naming the graded stakes winners, we have:

IMHO, we may not have a clear view of Tapit's legacy. His sons who have offspring on the track were foaled before Tapit became TAPIT. And with rather few crops, they've had some nice horses.
Concord Point (entered stud 2011) has SWs Arctic Ocean, My Point Exactly, Power Jam and Concord Fast.
Trappe Shot (2012) has G2SW Fish Trappe Road, SWs Megeve and Mirai, and G1PL My Man Sam.
Tapizar (2013) has SW Tip Tap Tapizar
I look forward to seeing how horses like Frosted and Tonalist do at stud.

A previous post mentioned this already, but I think the only people who cared/complained are the "OMG we send all our good horses to Japan, they need to stay here where they belong, where they're safe, and have pretty babies, because Japan is mean!" crowd.Horsebagger wrote:Creator wasn't any good, so why would anybody complain about not being able to breed to him? If you took a shot of bourbon every time you read "greedy owners" in those sort of complaints, you'd have alcohol poisoning pretty quick
