Stay Gold was the first son of Sunday Silence to win Group 1 race outside of Japan. And, like his sire Sunday Silence(USA), he was the most unlikely hero especiialy at stud.
Even after his death, he will continue to be one of the most prominent flag-bearers, if not the best, for the Sunday Silence's sireline.
Stay Gold didn't get best group of mares till fairly recently. But he managed to sire excellent boys who are already or will be at stud --- Dream Journey, Nakayama Festa, Orfevre, Fenomeno, Gold Ship.
May he rest in peace.

The only mare that Stay Gold covered this season before passing away this month, Elaine(King Kamehameha) has been confirmed in foal.

How interesting. One final crop of a single foal. Hope it's a good one.

Tachyon, do you know when the covering season begins in Japan? I know that in North America the standard is usually around February 14th, but if Stay Gold covered that mare before his death, it must have been pretty early in the year.

I believe that the covering season begins on around February 10th in Japan (opening date may vary among stud farms). But there can be some mares who visit busiest stallions earlier than that.
Stay Gold(JPN) covered Elaine(JPN) on February 5th this year and passed away on the same day.

Elaine(JPN) is a 1/2 sister to G1 winner Sadamu Patek(JPN).
Hope his final crop will be a good one, too!!

Copano Rickey is believed to have broken his leg during the race.
Fortunately it doesn't sound like a career-threatening injury.
Let's hope we will see him come back in the G1 Champions Cup in December!

I think the US is exactly the same. They open closer to February 10th but if you want your mare to be bred a few days earlier, they will accommodate you.

Tosen Stardom(JPN)(C4. Deep Impact x Admire Kirameki) --> Queen Elizabeth Stakes
To the World(JPN) finished 2nd in the G1 BMW Stakes 2400m turf at Rosehill on Saturday.

That was a nice effort by him in his first try in Australlia, but it seems that his dam To the Victory(JPN) is really struggling to produce her first G1 winner, haha.
That was To the World's third runner-up finish in the G1 races. His brother To the Glory was a placed in the G1, too. I hope that he will break through next time out in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes!

I got to see the race, and she just ran them off their feet. Nice-looking, strong filly, but...what an unfortunate name. :(
Is it possible that her owners don't know what a 'donkey' is?

Tachyon posted in the Oka Sho thread that the owners took her name from a quote from Don Quixote... "donqui" would've been cuter though.

Yes, the filly has been named after Don Quixote.
As for 'donkey', I would guess that her owner knew that a 'donkey' is an equus animal in English.
The English word 'donkey' is a common word even for the Japanese people who is not good at English.
But I guess that her owner does NOT know what a 'donkey' means to be for the horseracing fans in the Western world.
And I have got to agree that this talented King Kamehameha filly has an unfortunate name, haha!

Let's Go Donki has now been cross nominated to the NHK Mile (G1 1600m 3yo, May 10) and the Japanese Oaks (G1 2400m 3yof, May 24).

Gold Ship(JPN), 2009H. Stay Gold(JPN) x Point Flag(JPN) x Mejiro McQueen(JPN), has scored his 6th G1 wins as he won the G1 Tenno Sho Spring 3200m turf at Kyoto with his trademark long drive from the backstretch on May 3rd, 2015.
I believe that the Japan's most popular horse in training now stamps himself as one of the greatest grandsons of Sunday Silence(USA) along with Orfevre(JPN).

No surprise, he is a son of Stay Gold, quirky, but the real stamina influence of the Sunday Silence line.

After watching Gold Ship's antics when they tried to load him, maybe his handler is tearfully grateful that he (the handler) is still in one piece? ;)
That horse threw a fit during the load...and also threw his hind legs with some of the most 'bad intention' kicking I've ever seen. :o
He refused so many times, backing and kicking, that I thought he might end up scratched at the gate. And I don't understand why the Japanese starter never had the jockey dismount, a tactic I have seen work dozens of times here when loading a reluctant horse.
After all those antics, it was pretty amazing to watch him tear around the field from last, and maintain his drive all the way to the wire. He was so frelling strong, even after two miles.
I wonder if his connections intend to try him in the Melbourne Cup, because he sure looks like a true 3200 meter horse.
