How sad such a wonderful stallion is gone so young. This life is such a fleeting moment in the grand scheme of things. But that doesn’t ease the hurt of losing such a special animal.

We don't know if they did or they didn't. They said he came out of surgery fine and didn't have complications until the following day. So how the hell would them having a recovery pool have helped on the 2nd day???

I'd like to see Kizuna succeed at stud. He's beautiful and has a great pedigree on the dam side as well.

Was it ever explicitly stated that his ongoing neck condition was a result of covering 250+ mares for over 10 years in a row?

Today Mr Eisuke Tokutake, Shadai Stallions spokesman, didn't deny that possibility.
''We were trying to reduce his covering numbers by raising his stud fees. But we can't deny the possibility that his large book could result in his neck issue.''

Deep Impact covered 197 mares in 2018 following 231 in 2017.

The neck operation, as such done for the first time here in Japan, was reportedly lead by an experienced doctor from the US. So Mr Tokutake of the Shadai office said that the staff expected him to come back soon to his stall, but he didn't.

Mr Tokutake, with his eyes slightly bulging and dropping down to the floor, also explained about the last hours of the horse that he 'seemed to be obedient to his fate, not struggling, but just sleeping.' I am glad at that.

Just like our obscure pets, the horse has been a source of inspiration for lots of people, regular racegoers or not, with his whirlwind intertwined with various hardships in their private lives. This is why some major prime-time news channels chose his sudden death as the first topic of the day, with some of them even running a ten minutes long special feature on his legacy. It will be surely cherished for a long time to come. He was such a deep impact.

Perhaps most fittingly, the JRA G3 Leopard Stakes at Nigata, run as a memorial to Deep Impact as well, was won by Hayayakko carrying the Deep Impact/Kaneko Mokoto Holdings colors.
