So far, Tapiture, Ring Weekend and Constitution have the points to get in the Derby, and Tonalist may add to the Tapit Tally this weekend in the Wood. The grey stallion may have more horses in the gate than Pletcher. And his daughter, Untapable, might be good enough to run for the Roses, although I'm pretty sure she's Oaks-bound.
Tapit could have an Oaks-Derby double the first weekend in May.
It's too bad that Tap It Rich doesn't have the mind to go with his talent, or his name could have been on that list.
BTW, is Constitution the first notable bay Tapit?

I think that the distance question, as with pretty much any stallion's progeny, depends on the mare that produces the foal. Tapit's colt out of Zenyatta should get 10F. A Tapit foal out of, say, Groupie Doll, would probably be a sprinter/miler type.

halo, you are really quick to assume I am knocking Tapit. First, I like the horse. I think he is a good sire. It was just a question, it wasn't a knock on his beauty or ability to get a good runner. Second, so he has one G1SW that won at 10F?
He consistently sires horses that are good from 7 to 9 furlongs. I'd like to see them stretch out more, and like swale1984 said, the stamina will have to come from the mare.
Finally, I really meant the Derby. He's had a lot of hype and a lot of talented horses going into the Derby, and I would like to see one of these horses win the Derby one of these days.

and that's a perfect example of what I was referring to. Testa Matta is out of a Concern mare. Concern won the 10F Breeders Cup Classic, and his sire, Broad Brush, is one I look for in pedigrees as a stamina influence. In addition, there is stamina further back in the pedigree.Flanders wrote: Testa Matta won a G1 at 10f in Japan.

Tapit has as good a chance as any at getting a Derby winner since quite a few of the winners over the past twenty years have been by miler types and one of the best sources for stamina on the dirt (A.P. Indy) had a big goose egg for his Derby results.

I assume nothing. Ever. You said "BUT, can a Tapit get 10 furlongs?" Thats pretty easy to answer, they can and they have. As Admin said, just how many 1 1/4 races or further are there in the US, have you checked?Izvestia wrote:halo, you are really quick to assume I am knocking Tapit. First, I like the horse. I think its ridiculous to think a Tapit can't get 10 furlongs. His dam is by Unbridled, who is out of a Nijinsky II mare. Pulpit is by A.P. Indy. Thats about as much distance strength as you will find nowadays in any pedigree.

You can say that again. He's number one on the money list with earnings of $5,016,744. The next horse, Street Cry, is more than $2M behind with $2,921,133.halo wrote:It's Tapit's World.

But typically speaking, the stallion's dam doesn't figure into stamina as much as a foal's dam does. Yes, Unbridled got 10F, but most of his sons didn't. Grindstone is one exception, but if you look at his dam, you'll see Drone (also damsire of Charismatic), and Chateaugay (Derby/Belmont winner).
Same with Empire Maker who had the great Toussaud and probably is a large heart carrier.
Tapit, yes is from the AP Indy line, but Pulpit never won at 10F. His dam, Tap Your Heels, didn't route either. I think, for a Tapit foal to get 10F, the extra stamina MUST come from the dam. So, Ziconic, for example, should be a 10F horse. A foal out of mares like Balance, Zenyatta, Ginger Punch, Royal Delta, Rags to Riches, etc. would be ideal.

Your not kidding- who would of thought that he would be so successful as he went off to the shed. Always amazes me how certain sires just really sizzle at stud with very little hype.ThreeMustangs wrote:You can say that again. He's number one on the money list with earnings of $5,016,744. Looks like Tapit is an all-rounder as a sire. Got a Belmont winner now. Amazing...
I wanna do bad things with you.

It does add more to the resume, but some out there will need more winners at that distance to be convinced. Few races at that distance, so it is a bit of a mute point.
Tapits can run on shards of glass climbing up Everest, IMO. What a sire.
