She did extremely well for her first one- has the same white spot like Mama- she LOVES her baby. Not sure of the sex yet.

Seeing all these cute foals is making me even more anxious for the mares to foal here! I’m doing night watch and half the barn is over due and we still have no foals on the ground. Today is my day off so there is a possibility one could have foaled by now, so I guess I’ll find out tomorrow!

Stood up in quick order- made a attempt in 10- up in 30.

I noticed that the foaling attendants had to help 'Maria a bit by pulling the foal. Is this common with maiden mares, because of the mare's inexperience, her fatigue, or because that was such a large filly?

Where I work, we always assist pulling the foal out just to help the mare a little. Some mares will even give up pushing and want us to finish the job for them

. Then there are a few mares we don’t bother at all because they really don’t want us with them during the foaling. Only time we will help those mares out is if something goes wrong.

As I type this, SC Maria's foal seems to be having trouble figuring out how to nurse. There is someone in the stall with them trying to guide the foal. Baby is still pretty wobbly. Hopefully, the attendants will get that baby nursing soon.

The attendant went back in and tried to help her again, but it didn’t help. Maria sure didn’t like her messing around with her teats! Wonder if they’re going to give her a bottle or syringe some milk into the foal. That usually helps their brain jump start and figure out how to nurse. If it doesn’t, this foal could be a bit of a dummy foal.

It looked like she was nursing a little while ago...at least she was in the right position.

My monitor is a bit dark, so when the bay baby and bay mare are overlapped AND shadowed, it's hard for me to be sure the filly was latched on.

'Maria just threw a fast, hard kick with her left hind when the filly brushed against her while she trying to lie down.
Didn't hit her, but that still isn't optimal mom/foal bonding.

ETA: The filly is starting play...little cavorting half hops...and 'Maria looked surprised and a bit confused.

It's dark there now.

Just watching them makes me tired, I want them to lie down and nap.

SCM has allowed the foal to nurse several times, with human help but also without. Every now and then there's a little halfhearted kick but not aimed at the baby, I think they'll be fine.

I went to bed around 11pm EST, but just got up (after midnight here) to check on them. The foal is stronger, so I guess she probably did nurse. No attendant seems to be around now and it's dark. Baby is lying down and mom seems quieter. She had been frequently sort of half kicking or jumping. Almost like a little bit of a startled kind of movement from mom. But now she's standing watch over her baby. So hopefully everything will be ok.

The filly has definitely nursed, two or three times with an attendant and twice that I saw with them alone.

Could she be having some sort of post-foaling cramps? That would possibly make her flinch.
