I need help remembering the name of a tough as nails mare that retired about 7 or 8 years ago. She was bred before she retired and then ran a few more times.
The joke on this forum was that her foal was in the winners circle before even being born. I could be wrong, but I remember her being gray and racing mostly on the east coast circuit…
Her name is on the tip of my tongue but for the life of me I can’t remember it. I wanted to follow up and find out if that foal did become a winner.

Oleksandra raced in foal but that was 3 years ago. She wasn't grey though. The other ones I can think of were way too long ago.Smarty Deb wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 3:41 pm I need help remembering the name of a tough as nails mare that retired about 7 or 8 years ago. Maybe, but I remember that her name was “tougher” if that makes sense, and I think she ran more than once while in foal.Calypso wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 8:12 pmWas it Snow Top Mountain?Smarty Deb wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 3:41 pm I need help remembering the name of a tough as nails mare that retired about 7 or 8 years ago. Always feels like the end of an era when big mares are pensioned; it was bittersweet when they pensioned Leslie's Lady and Take Charge Lady, too. It's nice to know that Emma will live out the rest of her days adored by everyone around her!stelladaniella wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 3:45 pm Littleprincessemma, the dam of American Pharoah, has been pensioned from broodmare duties.

I mean they lied and said she was. Until the truth eventually came out but it never came out officially.flytpthestars wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 9:13 pmTake Charge Lady was never pensioned.KatieK101 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 1:59 pmAlways feels like the end of an era when big mares are pensioned; it was bittersweet when they pensioned Leslie's Lady and Take Charge Lady, too. So...what actually happened to Take Charge Lady? I do not remember reading details about her passing.

I don't remember specifics anymore. I don't think Coolmore ever said anything. Someone was asked and they said that she was fine and pensioned. But there was like a hushed rumor going around that she was actually dead. A few years later someone confirmed she had died in 2018 while foaling and the foal also died.

Not too uncommon in this part of the world. There is even a rule stating that a mare can race in foal up to a certain amount of days in foal (sorry I can't remember how many). I've spent days racking my brain for the name of a mare that won a G1 race while in foal and finally found her. The resulting foal was named Sunrise Ruby and never won a race herself.Smarty Deb wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 3:41 pm I need help remembering the name of a tough as nails mare that retired about 7 or 8 years ago. She had only won one race before getting in foal and then got 3 wins in 5 starts!
Ask me any questions you have about New Zealand and Australia racing

NYRA sent Puca flowers. Her 2024 Good Magic colt takes after his sire like Mage.
