not racing/TB related but QH breeder Katie Van Slyke reported that one of her mares just foaled 286 days into the pregnancy. the foal is standing, feeding and INTERACTING. all tests came back good. doesn't mean the foal will make it longterm, but just being born alive and then being seemingly well is already a huge miracle.

wow. So the foal was born at only 9 1/2 months? Is that unprecedented, at least for the foal to survive?

i believe she said the due date was April 20th. it's really hard for foals that young to really make it longterm, i think her biggest concern rn are how the legs will develop because rn it's basically cartilage so the foal can't really be walking on them for quite a while. she said the clinic has never had a foal that young survive tho.

Feathered has produced a full brother to Flightline. Full (long winded) post from Summer Wind’s Facebook
There is no joy quite like the safe delivery of a precious foal, particularly one who is a full brother to the horse judged best in the world.

Just before 1 a.m. on a blustery, chilly and ultimately snowy #FoalFriday, Jane Lyon's fabulous broodmare #Feathered (Indian Charlie) produced a dashing, white-splashed brother to #Flightline, America's Horse of the Year and the World's Best Racehorse of 2022. Sired by the redoubtable #Tapit of Gainesway Farm, the colt has all the character and looks one would expect from such racing royalty. He is approximately 12 hours old in these photos.

Being the Alpha Boss Mare that she is, Feathered arose almost immediately after producing the newborn and proceeded to shower him with attention, bathing his head, neck and back with motherly kisses. Despite the fact that she is generally the powerhouse ruler of the roost in the fields, she is so softly gentle with her new baby, caressing him with touches like velvet.

During daylight hours, before the sleet and snow began to fall from sullenly gray skies, Feathered and her new son spent time together in a paddock, where he tested his legs in bounces and romps under her ever-vigilant eyes.

This is how his story begins.

Everyone at Summer Wind has dreamed of his birth for nearly a year and now we will dream of his future. Yet at this miraculous moment, knowing he is not only safely on earth but also dazzling in looks and possibilities, time seems to have paused just so we can breathe in all that he is as nature's perfect creation.
Love a farm that posts social media updates, but gosh golly it is sometimes hard to work through the prose to find the details in their posts. Maybe they have a minimum word count they have to hit.

You're going to be waiting awhile. She didn't foal until May last year.

Don't know if it was on facebook or twitter, but Whisper Hill said she isn't due until May.

He's not getting any younger so I am glad she went to Dubawi.

Sad news about Verry Elleegant though.

Absolutely brutal. She was a star who deserved a long and happy retirement. Just not fair.
