I know- Im crying tears of sadness and joy at the same time.

Tried to get to see Indy when I was last in Lex- but they dont have tours in Sept. Told them all I wanted to do was see Indy, but a no go with a nice apology from them.

Hope that gals come in droves to him- he just takes my breath away just looking at him.

i kinda feel like liam's map would really benefit from another year of facing. he's run in 3 graded stakes, and won 2 of them beautifully while just missing the other. that's all fine and great but it looked like he was just getting into his best. he's not injured, so it sort of feels like a waste to retire him now.

"2 time g1 winning son of unbridled's song" is the only advertising angle they have, i think. i bet if he ran next year they could add to that 2 by a lot.

Or, he could fall prey to the soundness issues that befall many UBS offspring. :?
If he's retiring sound, I think that is a good thing to have on his resume.

Sure. But he was brilliant and breeders will go to him regardless. Depending on his fee, he should be able to make more money in 2016 in the shed than on the track.

so it was the right decision for him? sorry, i'm just not ok with the "ok he won his G1 off to the shed" mentality.

Its the safest decision for him. He has obviously had some kind of issues, not making his debut until late August of his 3yo year and then having a 6 month layoff between his last 3yo race and his first 4yo race. He has only raced 8 times, something else is going on there, and I don't think I've ever read why. Was it soundness, illness, immaturity?

Would I personally like to see him race another year? Of course. But if a farm buys into a stallion its nearly 100% of the time that they are retired at the end of the year. Its rare when they are allowed to race another year. Maybe its just something I've gotten used to. Its best to never expect a 3yo+ to come back the next year. That way, if they don't, you don't get disappointed. If they do, then you can get excited.

How many breeding sheds does Spendthirft even have? They're going to have to start doing coverings in the parking lot at this rate

Back in the late 80s, right around when the Bluegrass Bubble broke, they had the same amount of stallions they do now. So I'm sure they are just using existing stallion stalls at the Kentucky farm.

Thanks for the info - did B Wayne Hughes own it back then? I'm a youngin' so I only really see Spendthrift in relation to the boom they are having now (buying lots of young stallions, buying a farm in Australia, etc.)

No. The farm filed for bankruptcy and was sold, the stallions all were either relocated or sold, it failed right before Calumet did, I read about it in "A Wild Ride". It traded hands a few times and B. Wayne Hughes bought it in 2004, I think. I have a lot of old stallion directories because I've always been fascinated by pedigrees and I saw that they had that many stallions. What is honestly crazy is that Gainesway was standing 35 stallions in 1991.

I know it's the norm....but still seems bittersweet, and a little crazy that less that 24 hours after their last race they're on the stud farm in their stallion halters already. Has to be a drastic adjustment for those who've spent a fair bit of time at the track.
