It has to be from an injury. He doesn't have it when he was sold as a yearling.
The quality leaves a lot to be desired but here is as as a yearling, almost 2 working in Florida and its not there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqE2EQsSvuU
Well, if it IS from an injury, then no wonder they're keeping him in bubble wrap! The horse is accident prone in addition to having apparent soundness issues!

Forgive me for being cynical, but I just can't help it with THIS one!!
In the article posted in the Flightline thread he had another injury from an accident but it wasn't on his neck.
“I'm watching these sets train and saw lots of beautiful horses,” he said. “I'm waiting for the next set and I hear this big crash, a loud bang. The Tapit colt scared himself, something startled him. He had his tack on and was ready to go out, but caught his butt on a stall door latch. It was a pretty deep wound and took a long time to heal. You can see that scar back there. One of those fluke things that will happen. We gave him plenty of time to heal, then COVID hit, and a lot of people were on a holding pattern.

I looked at Malibu photos that show him from both sides, and I don't see a 'large' white patch. However, he did suffer an injury when he was young that caused him to miss his 2yo season. Check out this Paulick article and scroll down to Paula Taube's tweet, with a photo of his rump with the big, puckered scar.

Closer to the jockeys hand where the blue part of the reins is, it looks like lather but its in the exact same spot if you can find pics of him from that side:

They have pics of him here too, where its not there when he was a yearling and then its always there.
https://www.westpointtb.com/horse/flightline/ photos 14, 17 and 18 you can see both the white on his neck and also the white scar on his rump, near his tail from the injury when he was 2.

Interesting!

Do you have any updates on The Opera House? Did she foal this year?

No her studbook page has not been updated. Her farm are one of the super awesome ones that post pics and info on their foals and she isn't on there for 2021 and I saw a pic on twitter of her back around November that made me think she wasn't pregnant. Her page will likely be updated around the end of the month

Her dam is grey so I wonder if they messed up with her registration color or she could just look like that.

I have a question about coloring or maybe Birdcatcher spots? I noticed Gamine has a large number of white spots but they aren't really there when she was younger. So are they Birdcatcher spots or just something else like vitiligo or another cause?
Here is a link to her after the Acorn, the spots, while slightly there, they are still bay just lighter. https://www.paulickreport.com/wp-conten ... scaled.jpg

She's chestnut going grey :-) It's the hyperpigmentation from the grey that's skewing her colour.

Birdcatcher spots can occur basically anytime in horse's life. It's not vitiligo or anything else in this case.

Japan has their own Spielberg, who's been retired for several years already.

Her foal is adorable. Probably won't stay that lovely black.

I was going through some old photos that I had saved, and I came across this guy from the 2014 OBS August yearling sale. His name is Cash Munnings (Munnings X Apert X Valiant Nature). He's got a fun combo of "roaning" and a belly spot.
