As I said in the "Racing Forum," that buys you a live foal and a guaranteed vet scratch. :(

"Private"? I still don't understand what Calumet is trying to do, other than lose large amounts of money.

"Private" in this case probably means "$2K" or "literally free."

Don't think it matters if they are Private, have a fee or are free, no one uses them. The ones listed "Private" got 16 mares between them and by between them, I mean 3 of them covered mares in 2022. Hence was a new stallion in 2022 and didn't get a single mare.

I think its strange that they raised Keen Ice by 5k and Oxbow by 2.5k. Like Keen Ice I can understand more than Oxbow. Oxbow didn't have a breakout runner this year, Chuck has been a solid racehorse for years but he didn't win a G1 this year. I guess those 27 mares he got in 2022 definitely justified a fee increase, supply and demand right?

i will never understand the deal with Calumet. why do they keep so many stallions when a lot of them barely breed or do not breed at all? doesn't seem profitable. where does all their money currently come from? their auction prices are usually ridiculous. i don't understand why they keep their reserves so low either.

The owner is a billionaire. He started out in tobacco and now buys and sells land(he owns A LOT of land all over the US). I don't think he came in trying to make money, its a hobby for him. I was actually hopeful at first when he bought Calumet because he said he was going to stand the stallions he liked and wanted to breed to and would support them. The real problems besides them not being commercially fashionable was they were wildly overpriced and just too many to properly support. One of the best examples is Raison d'Etat, who was purchased for 140k at Keeneland November in 2013, then went to stud at Calumet in 2014 for 15k. Sure he has a nice pedigree but he wasn't even a SW. He got 25 mares his first year, I'm sure they were all Calumet mares cause no way someone paid 15k. Anyway, at some point the supporting them all kind of stopped and stallions started not covering mares in a given year or for multiple years. If he wanted to stand a non-fashionable stallion and support him, go for it, its just not feasible to do that for the vast majority of a 15 stallion roster. Sending a stallion 2 mares every 2 years isn't supporting.

As for the sales, I think he doesn't even put reserves on the horses because they wouldn't sell otherwise, or at least not the majority. Sometimes there will be a RNA. He just wants to get those Calumet bred horses out there. He attained his goal twice, becoming the leading breeder by earnings in both 2019 and 2020. Calumet finished 2nd last year to Godolphin and is 2nd to Godolphin again in 2022. Its more quantity over quality at Calumet.

Man, $8,500 for Mind Control? Even with his pedigree, I expected much better; despite what the article stated, no one wanted to stand him. Good luck to this marvelous boy !

Yeah and that is really good for a regional market. They don't stand for high fees. California has a few that are higher, including his sire Stay Thirsty, but Mind Control is the highest stallion (outside of Kentucky) besides the few in California.

(Dowsing in Indiana does not count, no one is paying 25k to breed to an unraced horse with a turf pedigree. They wont even pay that for a Multiple Champion/MG1 winning turf horse in Kentucky. I guarantee he only breeds his owners mares)

Oh, I didn’t know that, thanks !

NY is a good place for Mind Control, I’m not unhappy - he’d get swallowed up in KY.

I’m not familiar with Dowsing...but $25,000?! No doubt you’re right; are his owners trying to fool breeders into thinking he’s more popular and well regarded than he is ? So that they will breed to him ? 🤨🤨

Dowsing has a great pedigree, by Deep Impact out of a 1/2 sister to BC Mile winner Domedriver, from a spectacular female family(Sex Appeal/Best In Show). But is unraced and standing for a ridiculous fee.
