From the Bloodhorse article:
"Leslie's Lady would produce 15 foals, of which nine became racehorses and seven were winners."
Fifteen offspring should hopefully ensure that her bloodline continues, although the loss of America's Joy still hurts.

Wow, that's unfortunate, but surprisingly responsible of them too but not just throwing him into a reginal stud barn.Flanders wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 2:26 pmThey tried to sell him at the 2018 September yearling sale but he was unfortunate looking. He RNA'd at 60k. I'm guessing he didn't get better looking as he got older and they just didn't bother naming him, had him gelded and gave him away. He has a pretty head that is about all I can say when I look at him, ofc this is a photo from him as a yearling.Retrospectiv wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 2:18 pmAnyone know the status of her 2017 MDO colt? Never named so assumed he passed at an early age?ThreeMustangs wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 12:44 pm Leslie’s Lady has passed.

There were other photos from him at the sale and his legs were crooked, like really crooked. I can understand no one wanting to breed that on, even though he has spectacular siblings.
Thank you for that update.

Think it's kind of odd they couldn't be bothered to give a Leslie's Lady kid a name whether he would race or not.

Oh I'm sure he has a name. He's just not registered. There's absolutely no reason why he'd need to be registered. They also may have done it to keep someone who might be tempted by his bloodlines alone to try to race him. I'm really hoping he was gelded, too.

That was what I was thinking. If they don't register or give him an official name, it may remove any temptation to try to race or stand him.starrydreamer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 2:17 pmOh I'm sure he has a name. Looking at Loves Only You looking so racing trim made me wonder: what do people mean when they talk about a horse being ‘let down into a broodmare’ and what impact does it have?
I’m assuming that it means to gradually let the horse slip out of being really hard racing fit and into a ‘softer’ physique and attitude but would love to know more. How is it done? How do you logistically take a hard fit mare like Loves Only You and let her become a broodmare safely? Does it affect a mare’s fertility? Her mood? Thank you!

I would assume the main component is just letting them have more pasture/paddock time, maybe pairing her up with an older friend or two in a neighboring enclosure.
I remember Coolmore saying they specifically pastured AP next to Thunder Gulch, then retired and in his late 20s, because they thought he would be a positive and calming influence on AP during his transition.

Is this the right place for this article, who knows. Its about Pretty Polly and its very interesting. From her humble beginnings, her illustrious racing career, her broodmare career that started off not that great, and to her influence on the breed as a whole to this day. The last paragraph is amazing considering she only had 4 daughters.

Some racemares are given drugs while racing, such as Regumate, that certainly need to be out of the system. Being racing fit and well possibly still high strung doesn't exactly lead to rapid pregnancies either. If they are trying to breed as early as possible, they also need to artificially bring her into season. However, other than the overworked stallions in Japan, with over 200 mares, it seems their season tends to trend a bit later and the end seems a bit busier than in Kentucky, perhaps because Hokkaido winter is more harsh, and the main event 2 year old races don't happen until December, so aiming for March or April for covering seems to line up given her later retirement.KatieD wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 10:36 am Looking at Loves Only You looking so racing trim made me wonder: what do people mean when they talk about a horse being ‘let down into a broodmare’ and what impact does it have?

I guess that Loves Only You won’t be bred until March, too, even if early foals seem to have some advantages for the 3yo Classic races in Japan.CorridorZ75 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 12:32 amSome racemares are given drugs while racing, such as Regumate, that certainly need to be out of the system. She kept working on the track until recently to accompany her stable mate Marche Lorraine and to make her appearance in the retirement ceremony on Jan 30th.

Lucky Lilac(JPN)(Orfevre x Lilacs and Lace) gave birth to her first filly foal by Rey de Oro at Northern Farm today.
(Of sidenote, she ran her swansong in the Arima Kinen on Dec 27th 2021 and visited the stallion on Feb 21st 2022.)

That’s quite interesting and I'm now wondering which older mare Loves Only You will be paired with.
According to the most recent photos posted by Northern Farm, Chrono Genesis(JPN)(Bago), the 4-time G1 winning champion mare who had run her swansong in the Arima Kinen last December, seems to be paired with I'm Yours(JPN), the 13yo mare by Falbrav.

Considering how valuable these broodmares are, I would think that choosing the right companion for a newly-retired mare is a critically-important art.

Anyone know anything about Stellar Wind's 2019 colt? He's named but other than that nothing.
Also miffed they didn't give him an astronomy related name (dad is Galileo).

Brilliant Cut topped the FT Winter Mixed Sale, selling for $750K to Katsumi Yoshida. She finished second in the La Brea (G1) in December.

Terrific thread from the Aga Khan Studs about the legendary Mumtaz Mahal and her descendants, with plenty of photos:
