At Churchill Downs the vet voided the claim on Gardiner. Why would a track vet void a claim in a race?

Under Rule 2262 of the HISA regulations, claims are now voided if "the horse dies, is euthanized, bled, is vanned off the racetrack, or is later found to test positive for a prohibited substance." The rule stipulates all claimed horses head to the test barn to be observed by a regulatory veterinarian and that the claim will be voided if the horse is determined within one hour of the race to have bled, be physically distressed, medically compromised, unsound, or lame.Thumbsucker wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 7:19 pm At Churchill Downs the vet voided the claim on Gardiner. The no. CA stallion Point Piper, was a 10k voided claim out of his last start. The folks that claimed him wanted him as a stallion prospect. So they ended up buying him privately after the claim was voided, and I mean minutes after the claim was voided. Why that wasn’t done before the race was beyond me. He went off at odds on, looked……..sub par pre race and ended up running 4th.Diver52 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 1:42 pm I've never understood why the rules don't give the person making the claim the option to take the horse anyway. IIRC there was a horse of Doug O'Neill who routinely walked off ouchy and was a repeated voided claim, and he just kept winning. It was as if he was "protected." I can also see someone willing to go through with the claim if a horse has a positive test, or just wants a filly as a broodmare prospect.
