I don't remember seeing a post anywhere that she was retired. Such a tough NY bred. Those battles with Gitchee Goomie.

Popular NY-bred mare Hessonite has been retired. A 9-time SW and 2-time NY-bred champion, Hessonite will be in F-T sale on 11-4.

But once she's sold, does that really guarantee she's retired, or can the new owner put her back into training?

They could keep running her, she retired sound. But she'll be 6 next year and will already have been out of training a few months by the time the sale rolls around. It's possible, but probably not likely.

She'll probably be sold solely as a breeding prospect. Those are designated at the bottom of the catalogue page.

Just because a mare is sold as a broodmare prospect doesn't mean she can't race again. Hessonite has been fun to follow. If this is the end, then good for her, she proved her grit on the track. I hope she doesn't go overseas.

I am not an expert when it comes to breeding stock sales, but I do not think you can race a broodmare prospect.

Sure you can. IIRC, selling as a broodmare prospect only means the seller doesn't have to make the x-ray sets available. So buyer would have to make own determination on raceability, or, you know, just not care. But I know of fillies sold as BPOs who are running.
