There's a common phrase used by horseplayers for time immemorial when faced with a horse that looks just unbeatable in a race, and it's "that horse would have to fall down to lose". That's an expression that I've never ever even muttered outloud before any race. It's hard to keep a common saying like that from even entering my mind, but I would never say it outloud to myself or anyone else. The reason is obvious.

I often use, “The jock would have to fall off”, in a safe manner of course. I’ve seen multiple horses jump the rail, or back in the day, the hedge at Del Mar and Hollywood Park, when going on to an apparent win. One of them, Trotteur, was the last straw before Del Mar put a rail on the turf course. The rail was known as the “Trotteur Rail”. As for Trotteur, he jumped right into the photo finish mirror and was killed.

some of them are just determined to find a way to die. how terrible for everyone involved.
