Don Juan Kitten on Fair circuit

I received an alert yesterday for an entry for Don Juan Kitten, an excellent turf horse who unfortunately has had many starts and stops due to injuries. My initial reaction was "great, he's back after a year and half on the sideline." I've always liked this horse, since I bet him in his maiden win in 2019 on the Champagne card at Belmont.

This stunning grey horse is five years old and is 3-3-1 from 9 starts with over $200,000 in earnings. He was owned by the Ramseys and ran for Danny Gargan, then Mike Maker for his last two starts. This horse ran some huge races, losing by a nose to Domestic Spending, finishing second to Col. Liam, second by a neck in the Saranac and winning the JW Murphy at Pimlico.

Then I saw he was entered Sunday at White Pine Racing.

What?

I never heard of this meet. It's a 3-day fair circuit run in Nevada. It's so obscure, they were looking for jockeys a couple of weeks back, offering $75 per ride.

Don Juan Kitten has one workout and will run at 5 furlongs. Keep in mind, he's never raced on dirt, or less than a mile. I hope to see a video of this but not sure there will be any live video. Definitely alarming to see Kitten running here. I hope he is sound enough and does not get hurt.

Don't have an Equibase account but I have a list of various Kitten's Joy sons.

Don Juan Kitten was bought last fall by Texas connections to stand as a stallion there. I believe the farm was like "Lazy Y Farm."

It's upsetting and unfortunately not uncommon.

Thanks for that information. I saw he wasn't a gelding, so surprised he was not retired to breeding yet.

That's amazing. He's also entered on Friday's card. Not sure if he can run in both races.

The No. 3 horse Prater Sixty Four is running off a 5-year layoff. He did win a stakes over the track in 2016, lol.

And the No. 1 horse Jordynslumberjak broke his maiden over the track in 2018.

jesus what the hell? this is just horrible... i wonder if we can contact Mr. Ramsey somehow, maybe he could help, or even Hill n' Dale though that would be a bit more of a stretch.

also, that's probably just his 2 options. he'll scratch from one in favor of the other.

I posted the link to this on Twitter & asked old friends & paulick report for help. Also asked Barbara Livingston & Jay Privman. The more the better.

Unfortunately was able to find this:

(just incase the ad gets deleted it says:)
"I picked up 2 stallions this year and I only need one. So this beautiful grey is for sale as a stallion prospect or possibly take him back to the track. DON JUAN KITTEN (2017) stakes winner G3 stakes placed $202k, with a record of 9-3-3-1 last raced in 2020. Beautiful grey by KITTEN'S JOY and out of ROMANCE PROJECT by NOT FOR LOVE, she only had 3 foals 2 to race, the other earning $91k. 2nd dam is by HOLY BULL, with 5 winners, 3rd dam is by IN REALITY. And he's the right color and very easy to handle."

They also stand a 1/2 to Echo Zulu/Echo Town, named Burrow who is listed for sale. And they have War Like Goddess's 2yo 1/2 brother for sale.

I guess they decided "family" was more important than a horse's race record.

The race he's in isn't a claim, so you would have to pay up whatever his new owners want to get him.

Maybe it was a package deal and the other stallion was the one he wanted? I’m not excusing any of this if I were 20 years younger, I’d probably be there with a trailer and my vet so he could geld him—-Don Juan Kitten, not the owner. Weston is a gelding who used to be trained and partly owned by Ryan Hanson. He’s now trained by Mark Hanson, whom I’m guessing is related? The horse needed to drop to be competitive in so. CA so now he can run at the allowance or stake level and not get thrown to the wolves running 4.5f races at night at Los Al.

As I said in my tweet on Holly's page, I have nothing against fair racing. Of course, issues like this will always pop up. Weston has been running in races and is competitive at the level. No issues there.

My issue with Don Juan Kitten is he's a turf horse who's never run a sprint race, and never on the dirt. Hopefully, they just let him run easy and see what happens. I'd hate to see the jockey whipping and driving from the gate like's a 400-yard dash.

My guess would be they got Don Juan Kitten first then the opportunity to get a 1/2 to Echo Zulu presented itself. I just say that because the stud ad for Burrow was only put up shortly before Don Juan Kitten was put up for sale.

I dug around this morning looking for any live streams of White Pine (the fair has existed for 88 years apparently) but I haven't found anything.
