She joins a huge number of classy racemares that have been sold to Japan.
* I have often read laments about stallions like Sunday Silence, Silver Charm, Empire Maker and I'll Have Another being sold to stand in Japan but, IMO, it's the mares we've lost that have been our breeding industry's greatest loss.
* Azeri, Ginger Punch, Stardom Bound, Tapitsfly, Zazu (they really like the Tapit gals), Lilacs and Lace, Cozi Rosie, Belle Royale, Dubai Majesty, Musical Romance, Point Ashley, Spoken Fur, Gabby's Golden Gal, Gozzip Girl, Dubawi Heights, Laragh, Wickedly Perfect...and those are just the names I was able to track down via Bloodhorse. I'm sure there are more.

She's only 3, is she automatically retired now? So young, and I don't *think* there's anything wrong with her?

There are a few articles about her sale which do state that she won't run anymore.

This was a tough decision and I will so miss her, but she retires 100 percent sound and happy- She was one of my all time favorites due to her incredilbe personality and how much we shared such quirky traits- at the barn, she was like a big lab, and when it was racetime, she was "out of control" they have promised me tons of peppermints and her return to me when and if broodmare time comes to an end

I guess she couldn't pass up the money, but come on - it irritates me. She's 3, still a lot of nice races she could win, even at 4. Really? How dumb. And yes, I know it's only my opinion. But she's perfectly healthy, WHY NOW?

My guess is they offered more than the filly could ever hope to win. Maggi is no fool.

Teruya Yoshida has kept mares he bought in training racing in the past (at least until the year ends), but I guess perhaps Katsumi rather get her into quarantine and on her way to Japan instead of finishing the year?

I am sure the referenced "dumb" decision resulted in millions of dollars. I am looking forward to the day I make a similar "dumb" decision.

Because when you have the opportunity to turn a $22,000 investment into a significant financial gain, you take it.

Well, I'm bummed and surprised as in an article about Maggi Moss in the Bloodhorse magazine in August she mentioned that she'd been approached by Japanese interests, for a very generous sum. She had originally agreed to sell her, but "found herself miserable" so changed her mind and decided to keep her. The new offer must have been something...
Wish her the best, but sure wanted to watch her babies run here...

Through the years I've watched many of the mares I've followed with Alydar bloodlines exported to Japan (and elsewhere). A couple that you mentioned are Lilacs and Lace and Point Ashley. Some others are Jewel of the Night (dam of Evening Jewel), May Day Rose, Contested, Gorella (FR), and November Slew. Besides losing the bloodlines, it's frustrating trying to follow their progeny...

Like I said money taken out of the equation here, it's dumb to retire a perfectly good healthy 3yo filly. If the filly was such a pet to her, why sell her then? Surely she's not in financial hardship? She turned down previous offers on SMW. I'm just bummed, not about the sale itself. Why can't she be raced in Japan for a season before retirement? It's just so young, and there's not a damn thing wrong with her.

The horse is retiring safe and sound, even if she is young. 3-year-olds retire early all the time to go off to stud (fillies and colts). Would you prefer she retired crippled at the age of 7? Anything can happen to these horses, they can take a bad step on the track during a breeze, or maybe the horse won't handle the trip to Japan. Maybe the filly had an issue that was going to become a problem. Probably what happened is that they offered her a good sum of money and it was good business to sell. At the highest echelons of this game, money IS everything. She's not a gelding, Northern Farm is acquiring broodmares, it's Moss' horse. Moss does a great job of supporting retirement for OTTBs.
