Slammin Gold tries winners

Arguably the best-bred horse on the grounds is Slammin Gold, who makes his first start against winners Friday in a first-level allowance for New York-bred juveniles that drew a field of 11.

Slammin Gold is a son of Tapit out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Bar of Gold, winner of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Slammin Gold finished sixth on debut Sept. 14 before a runner-up finish in his second start Oct. 5. He finally broke through with a five-length maiden victory on Nov. 4.

John Kimmel, trainer of Slammin Gold, said the horse didn’t really know what he was doing in his first start and was rushed to the lead and faded in his second outing.

“He didn’t get anything out of his first race. I think he needed the second race,” Kimmel said. “Third race he showed what he could do, and I think he’s really going forward.”

Kimmel said he would have liked to have run Slammin Gold farther in distance, but the one-mile race did not fill.

This maiden race that just ran at Los Al was a Justify exacta with the winner Scatify being out of stakes winning mare, Broadway Run, that goes back to Lady Discreet. And runner up with March of Time, out of Untouched Talent which makes him a half brother to Bodemeister and Under The Stars. March of Time is a flashy boy and got stopped a few times as he was stuck on the rail.

Mandella said that Tamara, the winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante in September and beaten favorite when seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 3, continues to recover from a splint bone injury.

Tamara will begin a month-long rest at a local farm in coming days, he said. The injury was diagnosed after the BC Juvenile Fillies.

“It’s healing great,” Mandella said. “A little more time and she’ll be back” to the track.

Mandella said Tamara may not race until late spring.

It is too bad both of these horses have not been able to regain their previous competitive form.
