I mean, who would beat Roaring Lion?

He won the Coral Eclipse, the Juddmonte International, the Irish Champion Stakes, and the QEII on the trot. He didn't race against Enable or Cracksman, but Cracksman won the not-as-prestigious Prix Niel, then had to grind out the win in the Coronation Cup, then was below par in the Prince of Wales's, then missed 3 months due to unsuitable ground, before an outstanding performance in the Champion Stakes. He won 1 less G1 than Roaring Lion, and he missed every big dance of the Summer.

As for Enable, she only raced three times, and while the Arc and Turf were amazing, only one was in Europe, and it's only two G1 wins.

Alpha Centauri was great but didn't finish the season and only had one win against open company. It will take a very quiet year for a stayer, even a star like Stradivarius, to win HOY.

I was/am a big fan of all the nominees, but Roaring Lion had the best season of 2018.

Great points, Northport, and I completely agree.

There were some very nice horses up for the honor -- Cracksman was sensational in a few out his outings (and not in the others), and Alpha Centauri was a model of consistency but largely in restricted company. Enable didn't put a hoof wrong but just had missed too much of the year. Roaring Lion absolutely had the best overall season and I'm tickled for him. I hope he has a successful career at stud.

Should be underlined that Roaring Lion has done something no colt in thlonger US has ever done that is to say win 4 G1s (or the equivalent thereof) against older males as a 3yo. Closest have been 3 G1s against olders (Arts and Letters, Secretariat, Easy Goer.
As for Europe, he is in select company. Sea the Stars and Giant’s Causeway have been the last two to accomplish such a feat, that not even the likes of heroes from the 70s or 80s did (came close with 3 a piece).

Eminent, a classy group performer by Frankel, has been brought out of retirement and will be returned to training in Australia.

There was a lot of hype around this horse as a 3 and 4 year old, but he never really lived up to it. Tbh, I forgot he existed and had no idea he was retired, but Meade said he had a fibrillating heart, which would be a good reason to retire him in the first place. Meade sounds not too thrilled about the decision.

He finished 2nd in a G1 at Rosehill last week. They’re throwing him in the really deep end next: he’s scheduled to run against Winx in her final race on 13 April.

Does anyone know what racing in Scotland is like? I know they have a Grand National, but what else and do they breed or just import from England and Ireland?

They have 5 racecourses; Ayr, Hamilton, Perth, Kelso and Musselburgh, which hold a mix of flat and jumps.

Trainers tend to send their horses over the border to the UK if needed and English trainers will often send theirs to Scotland, it’s not really seen as a big deal to race across the border to be honest (unless you’re the groom and have an exceptionally long day!). They have some fairly decent races but nothing on synthetic - the nearest one would be Newcastle.

From a breeding perspective, there is not a Scottish prefix on horses, they’ll just be registered with GB and they’re all registered under Wetherbys. As with an British racing, quite a lot of horses are imported from Ireland or France.

I had a quick look and there’s 14 studs registered here http://www.directoryoftheturf.com/searc ... y/Scotland but that wouldn’t include an private breeders etc. Stallion wise, I believe people tend to use the ones based in England, I can’t think of a single TB stallion standing in Scotland...

So am I. I so wanted to see Too Darn Hot in the Guineas. But apparently he’s prepping for the Dante now which is a prep for the Epsom Derby.

Just curious, comparing our Derby with big races around the world. Full fields like the Arc or Melbourne, wherever, what happens when there's bumping at a critical point in the race? Are there unwritten let 'em run rules that everybody understands? Any famous DQ's?

I’d venture there’s a lot less bumping going on because their courses are configured differently the races are configured differently and the courses are a LOT bigger and wider, plus in some countries (well granted I’m mostly thinking Japan) 18 horse fields are the norm rather than the exception.

Also if AOB’s words are anything to go by remember what he described as the “savagery of American racing” last year after the Derby lol. Methinks the KY Derby bumper cars is a unique phenom...
