Miss Woodford wrote: Sat Nov 05, 2022 5:12 pm The weird thing is that I've seen a lot of racing fans and pundits from Europe view him like that too, I guess because colts with short brilliant careers have been the norm there for a while now.
I think that, plus the win margin was just so visually impressive (and an easy comparison). But I mean, Arrogate was compared to Man o' War by the Dubai announcer a few years back, so maybe it's something we're just doing now?

I guess we'll see what happens. I'm resigned to him winning, but absent an announcement about a 5yo season in the winner's circle it probably won't feel very good. All the casual fans getting hyped up right now are, in all likelihood, going to be in for a major disappointment in the future.

Idk. I'm switching my Taiba bets to Olympiad because Olympiad shouldn't be 25-1 and I really want a horse with eight starts to win the race. Any of them would be quite the story!

Wait, have they even talked about Rich Strike yet? The one horse with actual name recognition among the public??

Thinking about it a bit more, I'm kind of irate about it. The David vs. Goliath Round 2 story is RIGHT THERE. Hello??

Meanwhile I just saw someone compare Rachel Alexandra with Winx, in that Rachel "wasn't as good as Winx."

A dirt classic horse in the US from 2009 to an Australian turf horse in the 2020s.
Only user to pick Rich Strike (89-1) in the 2022 Derby Pool Contest. | 2x Greatest Handicapper of All Time (2022 - 23) (2023 - 24) ✧ I kissed I'll Have Another! ✧

That doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching him. He has a prodigious talent, but a horse who has run only five times can not be compared to previous great horses who ran more. sometimes a LOT more.
IMHO the comparrison to Ghostzapper is the only one that makes any sense.
More like Candy Ride. Except Candy Ride won on multiple surfaces and set a track record in his Pacific Classic.

I could listen to Mike Smith analyze a race every day. As much as I don't like Baffert, Taiba is a classy horse.

Haven't heard anything about Rich Strike yet.

Oh hey, Rich Stirke is in this race!

The undercard coverage was mostly great, but this is such a weird miss. Instead of "watch this great horse you ungrateful peasants," the story should have been "possible Secretariat vs. that huge underdog you've heard of already" from the very start. So bizarre.

Domestic Spending suffered a serious pelvic fracture during the running of the BC Mile. He is currently stable and getting the best care/evaluation at Rood and Riddle equine hospital. I will provide updates when they are available. 🙏

Fingers crossed for Domestic Spending :(

Yeah, I just think it's really bizarre that he wasn't even mentioned until now. It's all theater for the casual fans, and Rich Strike was very popular this spring. I guarantee that some people would tune in to see if he tries to bite Flightline or whatever, if nothing else.

Guessing there are a lot of folks in and around racing who aren't particularly happy with the behavior of him, his trainer or his jockey...

ALL the NBC analysts are picking Flightline? That much weight could jinx him.

Lava Man does NOT look like someone ready to retire. :o
Have they asked him what HE wants?

yeah... frustrating to witness, though, given how happily they'll celebrate other controversial figures in the sport.

Lava Man looks more keyed up than Charlie!

Him being 21 and having a long racing and long ponying career I have to imagine they've been carefully managing his soundness, with hock injections and/or supplements and plenty of rest, and it might just be accumulated wear and tear making his day job unfeasible. Sometimes horses still have that desire to work but their bodies disagree.

I heard them say (earlier) is it 4 yet? Cause I think that was when the wind was supposed to calm down.
