Masar injury blow: Derby hero misses Eclipse

Derby winner Masar is to miss Saturday’s G1 Coral Eclipse at Sandown Park after returning sore from routine work at Moulton Paddocks on Friday.

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby said the colt will be monitored by vets in the next 48 hours before any decision on future plans is taken.

“Mid-way through the morning, it became clear that he was sore. His off-fore was inflamed, and we feel he must have knocked himself at exercise,” the trainer said.

“He will not be running in the Eclipse. I have discussed it with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who agreed that he should miss the race.

“It is a blow. But it is the right decision considering what has happened. Masar will remain under veterinary supervision for the time being.

“Hawkbill will still run for Godolphin in the Eclipse, and Will Buick will switch to him,” he added.

Sorry to hear about Masar but I'll be rooting for Hawkbill. He has a tall order though as it really is a sparkling edition with the aforementioned Saxon Warrior (who may appreciate the cut back in distance), Roaring Lion and Cliffs of Moher. Happily is a nice filly but she won't get anything close to the soft turf she seems to favor.

So I'll go with Hawkbill to bounce back from a rough time at Royal Ascot -- if he can get to the lead where he is best.

Still, really nice to see his progeny triumph at the highest level overseas. And the winner being a grandson of Cambiocorsa? How cool is that?

And I'm not a super religious person but I like his name because it reminds me of that line from the Book of Peter 5:8 that I've heard quoted in movies:

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

Alpha Centauri in entered in the Falmouth Stakes(G1) on July 13th.

Saxon Warrior has been withdraw from consideration for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and Sussex Stakes. He will instead get a little break with his next race slated to be the August 22nd Juddmonte International, where he may meet up with Roaring Lion, Masar and possibly Enable.

Athena is under consideration for the Irish Oaks(July 21st) and Nassau Stakes(August 2nd)

Mendelssohn is still pointing to the BC Classic.

Gustav Klimt will most likely race next in the Sussex S.

Hunting Horn may point to either the Secretariat S. or a race in Europe.

They said they are going to look for a prep race and then decide on the BC Classic.

Thunder Snow return to action likely next month

Saeed bin Suroor revealed that Thunder Snow, the impressive winner of the G1 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline at Meydan, UAE, at the end of March, could make his European return in the Prix Jacques le Marois (G1, 1m, turf, 12 August) at Deauville.

The trainer said: “We are planning to take Thunder Snow to the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1, 10f, dirt, 29 September) at Belmont Park, New York, at the end of September, but want to give him a race in Europe first. That could be the Prix Jacques le Marois.

“Thunder Snow is fine – he just needed a break. The ultimate target this year is the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1, 10f, dirt, November 3, Churchill Downs).”

I can't wait to see her in the BC Mile. IMO, she's so good that she could go on a Goldikova-style win streak in The Mile, if she were to stay in training that long.

Alpha Centauri is a very nice filly. Interesting to read that the trainer was so nervous in the days leading up to the race.

U.S. Navy Flag takes the July Cup (G1). Looks like the cut back in distance was just what he needed. 1 - 3 finish for AOB and War Front.

Sea of Class (Sea The Stars) nails Forever Together at the wire to take the Irish Oaks (G1) under a perfectly-timed ride by James Doyle. AOB has been surprisingly shut out in the first four Irish classics this year.
