Gran Alegria was fantastic. I love when they can go out on a huge win. Have her connections announced a mating plan?

Gran Alegria won her last race like the champion she is  Sugoi!

Have they picked a stud for her yet?

I vote for either Lord Kanaloa or Maurice.... Or even Frankel if they don't mind shipping her to Europe!

Her mating plan has yet to be announced.
This is going to be wide-open.
If they want to have an inbreeding to Sunday Silence (3 x 4), Epiphaneia will be the top choice and Maurice might be the alternative.
If they want an outcross, Lord Kanaloa must be seen the most proven.
But my pick is Rey de Oro.
Rey de Oro's first crop sold very well at the JRHA Select Sale this summer and, like Gran Alegria, he was trained by Kazuo Fujisawa.

Would either California Chrome or Bago be out of the question?

Bred by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm and owned by Sunday Racing (that is strongly connected to Shadai Group, especially Northern Farm), Gran Alegria is purely a Shadai Group horse.
So it is highly unlikely that Katsumi Yoshida sends her to a stallion who is NOT standing at Shadai Stallion Station from her fist mating.
They have got to support their stallions first.
Sending her to overseas to make her visit such big names as Frankel, Into Mischief etc. remains a possibility, but the chance must be very slim.

It's a disadvantage.
No horse ever won the Japan Cup from the post #18.
Three horses won the Japan Cup from the widest draw in the past.
But those are the good old days.

Symboli Rudolf(JPN) in 1985 from the post #15
Pay the Butler(USA) in 1988 from the post #16
Tokai Teio(JPN) in 1992 from the post #14

Horses drawn inside seem to be favorable these days.

Contrail!!! That was lovely. The race overall was a little strange, but the stretch run set up just as one might've scripted.

That was the perfect swansong for the winner! :D
