Im usually against twitter firestorms regarding horseracing, but this one was fully warranted. At first it seemed like it was a young apprentice racing for the first time, then it came out that the jock is in his 50s or early 60s and works in Jim Bolger’s yard and was a jockey in Pakistan.

I don’t watch much Indian or Pakistani racing but I really hope his style isn’t commonplace. Pretty much standing up in the irons entering the final furlong and then flogging the horse 12-13 times was a sorry sight. Never bothered getting lower in the saddle and driving the horse to the line, just straight to the whip. The whip and whip bans have gotten enough negative attention in Europe this year, activists don’t need any more fodder.

How has the Dubawi over Galileo cross done so far? Has it been as successful as the Deep Impact/Galileo cross has been for Coolmore?

There isn't a son of Deep Impact that I could find on True Nicks. So its just Dubawi or Deep Impact over daughters of Galileo. The Dubawi cross is less than his normal 13% SW to foals of racing age.

Dubawi over Galileo mares:
8% SWs/foals of racing age. 2 G1SWs in Night of Thunder and Ghaiyyath.

Deep Impact over Galileo mares:
16% SWs/foals of racing age. 3 G1SWs in Auguste Rodin, Saxon Warrior and Snowfall

I was going to say they have Saxon Warrior already, but he's out of a Galileo mare, lol. I think the best they can do at this point is try to buy one from Shadai (good luck) or get a good grandson.

They used Lord Kanaloa for some 2023 foals out of Galileo mares but he isn't a son of Deep Impact. It doesn't look like they sent any Galileo mares to Japan for 2024 foals.

With Justify taking a big step forward this year, and the first Irish bred Wootten Bassetts hitting the track, I don’t think Coolmore will be searching for a Japanese or Deep Impact line successor for their Galileo mares. They have a couple of their own decent options in house. The days of War Front and the far East seem to be in the rearview for now.

Very interested to see them sending star racemares to Gun Runner though. With the exception of Quality Road, they don’t really use a lot of American based non Coolmore dirt sires for their good turf mares. Guess GR’s debut season was too good for them to ignore.

I know they acquired Wootten Bassett as a classy outcross, but they have also been trying to find a worthy successor to the late, great Scat Daddy. With young stallions like Sioux Nation, Caravaggio, Mendelssohn and Justify, they had plenty of choices. I was surprised they parted with Caravaggio (another coup by Japan), but they could probably see that Justify was turning into The One.
I do expect we'll see world-class runners sired by the former Coolmore stallion coming out of Japan in a few years.

I wish they supported their young stallions that are at the middle range of the market, but it seems that only the Triple Crown winners get the full support of the Coolmore broodmare band in the last 10 years. They still barely send any mares to Camelot, and No Nay Never only started getting their mares once his fee crossed six figures.

The talk coming out of Japan about Contrail after the Select Sale is borderline spooky. His first 20 foals/weanlings sold for an average of $998,000USD. David Redvers, a top bloodstock agent in his own right and the manager of Qatar Racing, said he visited Contrail at Shadai during the sale and said:

"Everything was about Contrail there, we went to see him at Shadai and I honestly think he’s one of the best looking horses I’ve ever seen," said Redvers. "He’s possibly slightly lighter, more a European style of horse than might be ideal, but they were making fortunes, everyone seemed to want to have one”
