Ok, I give in. Why is it scary for them to name horses after themselves?mariasmon wrote:But, hey, the equally scarily named Ballydoyle (IRE) won the G2 Debutante on the same card. So this whole thing of naming horses after themselves isn't all bad.carole wrote:She was 3rd. Broke really slow and looked green down the stretch but once she got going, she made up a lot of ground. Disappointing run from Star of Kings in that race.mariasmon wrote:COOLMORE (IRE) is making her debut tomorrow at CUR in the 2:25 race. Let's see how good Gleneagles's (and Marvellous's) scarily-named little sister is.

Saint Ballado has been a successful broodmare sire. His daughters have produced numerous stake winners and stake placed winners.Indiano wrote:I can't recall any Saint Ballados that have bred on, but she did get sent to Street Cry 3x and it's possible that's just not a match that worked. And of course Bernardini isn't getting many stars these days either.ThreeMustangs wrote:Ashado has pretty much been a bust as a broodmare so far, hasn't she?mariasmon wrote:Theatric (Bernardini x Ashado) is about to make her debut at Saratoga.
Here are some of the graded stake winners his daughters have produced.
Lady Eli - Gr.I
Dance With Fate - Gr.I
Saint Afleet - Gr.II
Charitable Man - Gr.II
Roxy Gap - CAN-G2
Aikenite - Gr.II
Crucero - Gr.III
Code West - Gr.III (full to Charitable Man)
Richiegirlgonewild - Gr.III
Golden Mystery - Gr.III
Century Park - Gr.III
Bizzy Caroline - Gr.III (half to Lady Eli)
Declan's Warrior - Gr.III
Southdale - CAN-G3
Speechify - Gr.III
I see that Ashado was bred to Lemon Drop Kid for 2016. This has been a good cross for Saint Ballado mares producing Charitable Man and Code West.

I think because for Coolmore, the more clever or iconic the name (George Washington, Camelot, Australia) the better the horse. So for them to name a horse after themselves means that they may have another star on their hands. That's just my theory thoughLife At Zen wrote: Ok, I give in. There's a nice article in today's Irish Times that talks about who names the horses:Northport wrote:I think because for Coolmore, the more clever or iconic the name (George Washington, Camelot, Australia) the better the horse. Also a nice little tidbit about George Washington:“If our owners win €2 million in prize money, it goes straight back into the horses for training and staff and feed and the rest,” Annemarie says. “The idea is to find the next Galileo or Gleneagles or Australia.” And that’s never a sure thing. “We’ve more than 160 horses each year and if we find just one of that calibre, it’s a result.”
Today the stud team are in France buying horses. When they come home, it will fall to John Magnier’s wife Susan to name them “She’s great at it,” Annemarie says. “Australia. Camelot. Galileo, Gleneagles. They’re strong names that fit the horses perfectly. That’s no accident.”
Sometimes, before a horse is raced, their name gets changed. If it’s not going so well, a cool name might be taken off it and given to a better horse. It’s lucky horses don’t speak fluent English, a sensitive one would never recover from such a slight.
http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-styl ... S0.twitterAnnemarie mentions George Washington, another beloved Ballydoyle graduate. “He was a great horse,” she says with affection. “But he could really test your patience couldn’t he?”
The other O’Brien laughs. “Oh you’d have to be very firm with him alright or he’d walk all over you. He used to take his reprimand at the stable right enough, but he’d remember it and he’d know you couldn’t give out to him on the track, so he’d be up to pure devilment there and giving me the two fingers.”

Looking through Suffolk's entries for Saturday (thirteen races and most of them pretty full, way to go Suffolk!), I was surprised to see Mr. Hot Stuff's name pop up in a hurdle allowance. With him plus a few other old favorites on the card, I might have to go after all.
EDIT: Actually, I misread that. There is a hurdle race earlier on the card, but I think he's entered in a 12f flat race that was open only to horses who have started over fences. Pretty neat.

Dreamologist, 3yo filly by Tapit out of Dreaming of Anna, runs in the 4th at Del Mar, a 1 1/8 MSW on the turf.
ETA: She went flying around the field soon after the start, running so far out in the middle of the turf course that it looked like she was running off on Flavien Prat. But he got her to settle a bit, brought her back to the rail...still many lengths in front of the rest of the field...and she stayed there. Won by several lengths.
You can't miss her in a race...she's almost blindingly white.
