Glyn Tawy is Welsh for Vale of Tawy. There is also a song of that name by Celtic guitarist Chis Grooms.
Kawa could be the Japanese glyph for "leather," a programming language for the Java platform, or the Maori word for the ceremony to open a new house.
Moksgm'ol is the Spirit Bear of the Tsimshian people of British Columbia.
Krpan is a German manufacturer of agricultural and forestry machinery.
Neuk is a Scottish word for nook or corner.
Aizhai - the Aizhai Bridge in China is known as the highest suspension bridge in the world.
Naku Ka Ni Way Ra is Maori for I'm On My Way, according to MyMemoryTranslate.net.

Swamp Rat is racing today at Saratoga: good Lord, i will never understand how someone can do that to a horse: what a horrible and dreadful name. i have a theory that horses often live up to, or down to their names.

Re Glyn Tawy--in June I walked through a town in Wales called Glyndyfrdwy. I'd like to see any race caller deal with that one!
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Maybe not so crazy. Anyone with an even passing interest in drag car racing will remember Don Garlits and his series of SWAMP RATS - the fastest drag racers ever and known for their incredible acceleration. I'm guessing this is what the horse connections had in mind.barbaro111 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 29, 2018 3:16 pm Swamp Rat is racing today at Saratoga: good Lord, i will never understand how someone can do that to a horse: what a horrible and dreadful name. i have a theory that horses often live up to, or down to their names.
I've seen many horses that, at first glance, have seemingly terrible and pathetic names - but upon just a little investigation, it turns out that you can easily move then over to the "Clever names for horses" thread...

WarBiscuit, thank you for reminding me about Big Daddy. I got to watch him race in his prime, probably in one of his Swamp Rats. Top Fuel racers owe him a huge debt for developing the rear-engine dragster, which made a dangerous sport a lot less so.

Kawa is also the word for River in Japanese. And it is a word in Maori as well that I believe refers to some kind of household code of honor or rules?BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 29, 2018 2:40 pm Glyn Tawy is Welsh for Vale of Tawy. Daddy’s Mistress f. (Daddy Nose Best x Trash Master), who I believe is the first starter for the handsome stallion Daddy Nose Best (Scat Daddy), ran in Race 6 at Del Mar today. Finished 8th.

I appreciate the context and it is interesting - the name may be ok for a car, but IMO not for a horse. oh well at least i can understand how the horse got his name.WarBiscuit wrote: ↑Fri Aug 31, 2018 3:16 pmMaybe not so crazy. In today's 3rd at Saratoga, there is a Point Given son named Jiggy Cheese Dog.
I'd like to know what the owner was thinking.

Eric Cancel had five rides yesterday. Three were on Jiggy Cheese Dog, The Glominator and Phone Funky Munky. How does he expect to improve his win percentage in NY accepting mounts like that?Mylute wrote: ↑Sun Sep 02, 2018 2:43 pmFinished last. A filly named Slimey broke her maiden this evening at Indiana Grand.
What makes it worse is that she comes from a big family. Third dam is Words of War, Storm Cat also on the dam side.
She's by Quality Road.

Now that's pretty bad. Could be named after Oscar the Grouch's pet worm who makes those weird squeaky sounds - or maybe not...

I'm sad to say that a death report is now listed for this colt (May 10, 2018). Never mind the name...he was bred to be a nice one. His 3YO full sister broke her maiden today.neighhey wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2017 12:02 am Not horrible exactly, but I'd like to nominate the 2017 Grand Reward-Marian Sh Temple colt for "Most Unimaginative Name for a 2017 foal"...
Bit of backstory...the mare (who is from a nice family...2nd dam is Classy Mirage) had her 1st foal, Manipuler (ARG), in 2009. He was a GSW and track record setter, and is now standing at stud in Argentina (his 2nd crop of foals are arriving this year). Marian Sh Temple was sold in the dispersal of Haras La Quebrada's broodmare band earlier this year. So now we have a full brother to Manipuler (ARG) being named...I'm Manipuler (ARG).
Why do I feel like this colt's going to go through an identity crisis?

Dirty (Maclean's Music x Martini) was second in the Allied Forces Stakes.
I know the name comes from dirty martini, but I still wouldn't name my stakes runner "Dirty".
