She has had colic quite a few times and Jane Lyon doesn't want to put her through more stress. She was pensioned after having her 2019 colt, Tattered Flag.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 10, 2022 10:19 pm I wonder why Careless Jewel is retired from breeding? She's only 16.![]()
Wasn't that the reason, or one of them anyway, that Toussaud was never allowed to raise her own foals? I know she was a temperamental little "B", anyway, but think I remember reading that somewhere.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 2:07 pmThat makes sense. Colic in a pregnant/just foaled mare can be deadly.
can't say for sure as i can't open the article (unavailable in my country) but there should be something about that here https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xp ... story.htmlMissbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 8:04 pmWasn't that the reason, or one of them anyway, that Toussaud was never allowed to raise her own foals? i thought she was laminitic? which i don't think is a word. but it may have stemmed from colic? geez my memory is shot lol.Missbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 8:04 pmWasn't that the reason, or one of them anyway, that Toussaud was never allowed to raise her own foals? That sounds about right to me, now that you say it. I think that is what I'm remembering........that she had problems with recurring laminitis.sweettalk wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 8:18 pmi thought she was laminitic? which i don't think is a word. but it may have stemmed from colic? geez my memory is shot lol.Missbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 8:04 pmWasn't that the reason, or one of them anyway, that Toussaud was never allowed to raise her own foals? Her other GI winner, the Seattle Slew mare Honest Lady, apparently died at Juddmonte Farms in 2019. Again, thats from the comments in PQ. It didn't give a cause of death, but she was 23 years old.CorridorZ75 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 10:32 pm For all the good genes Toussaud put in her foals, Empire Maker and Chester House both died from rare diseases. Chiselling apparently was diagnosed with EPM, though that is sometimes a diagnosis of exclusion, especially the further back you go, and Decarchy inherited the bad feet as he also died from complications of laminitis. Not sure about her other foals.
*high five* we figured it out! i didn't think to check PQ (which, yeah is iffy sometimes, but sometimes it's solid)Missbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 9:49 pmThat sounds about right to me, now that you say it. Just in: I just checked PQ (not 100% reliable), and there's a line in the comments section on her that she was pensioned from broodmare duties in 2007 "due to laminitis". So that answers that, I guess!![]()
my heart breaks when i see/hear his name, even today
Yes, that was a tragic loss for Juddmonte. You know, he died in June, 2003, just after Empire Maker won the Belmont. I have always had the feeling that, if that hadn't happened and Chester House had lived, that the Prince wouldn't have retired Empire Maker after his 3yo season. I think he really wanted to run him as a 4yo, but after losing Chester House so suddenly, Empire Maker's services in the shed were needed badly, especially because they were half-brothers out of his incredible blue hen mare!sweettalk wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 2:13 am*high five* we figured it out! i didn't think to check PQ (which, yeah is iffy sometimes, but sometimes it's solid)Missbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 9:49 pmThat sounds about right to me, now that you say it. Her owner Yusuke Yamaguchi has said today; ''Reframe, 4yo, will remain in training for another year before becoming a broodmare, because she is still improving. She will be pointed to the G3 Negishi Stakes 1400m dirt at Tokyo on Jan 30th.''
