Big Orange finished a gallant second to Stradivarius today in the 2-mile G1 Goodwood Stakes.

Tomorrow will feature what should be fine edition of the 1-mile G1 Sussex Stakes, with another match-up of Ribchester and Churchill. Race goes at 10:35 AM Eastern/7:35 AM Pacific, if I've done my time adjustment correctly.

Longshot Here Comes When Holds Off Favored Ribchester To Win Rain-Soaked Sussex StakesBaroqueAgain1 wrote:Tomorrow will feature what should be fine edition of the 1-mile G1 Sussex Stakes, with another match-up of Ribchester and Churchill. https://www.paulickreport.com/news/bree ... ex-stakes/Here Comes When got the better of hot favorite Ribchester to run out a shock 20-1 winner of in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. For his victory, the 7-year-old gelding by Danehill Dancer earned an automatic expenses-paid berth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile.
Having already won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot this season, Richard Fahey's Ribchester was unsurprisingly a warm order to complete a Group One hat-trick, especially after the late withdrawal of dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill.
The 8-13 favorite made much of the running in the deteriorating conditions, but William Buick was hard at work in the saddle with two furlongs to run and the Andrew Balding-trained Here Comes When battled his way to the front in the hands of champion jockey Jim Crowley.
Just when it looked as though Ribchester was fading, he rallied to the cause, but while he was making ground again at the finish, Here Comes When held on by a neck. Lightning Spear was third.

Winter Is Here.
Again.
The powerful grey daughter of Galileo took the G1 Nassau Stakes, handling the ten furlongs, older mares and very testing ground.

I'm hoping that we get to see a match-up between her and Enable. Maybe in the Arc?

He had a bad start, then was flat. Very disappointing.mariasmon wrote:Caravaggio's race was shown on Xpressbet live an hour ago. He did not run well.Squeaky wrote:Is Caraveggio's race at Deauville being shown live anywhere?

He's had two lackluster races in a row now. I wonder if O'Brien will stop on him for a while?
Kind of puts a monkey wrench in their plans to send the Scat Daddy colt to Australia for that new, multi-million dollar sprint, The Everest. Normally, I'd think there might be the option of putting the colt up until next season, since he's only three, but I'm pretty sure Coolmore REALLY wants him working in the breeding shed next spring.

Caravaggio Found to Be Sore
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/ca ... dium=emailCaravaggio (Scat Daddy) is “very sore” after his slow starting sixth-place run in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Sunday, connections reported Monday.
“Caravaggio was shod before the G1 July Cup and the day before he was just a little bit footy,” said O’Brien. “We changed the style of the shoe that he was wearing to one with a bit of rubber between the foot and the shoe itself. He was 100% when we put them on.”
Regarding Sunday’s performance, O’Brien said, “He just didn’t travel the way he can travel, and he ran again in those shoes on Sunday. Ryan [Moore] came back in and said he’s just not getting any traction. The rearing up in the stalls is something we can sort, but when he came out Ryan said he’s changing and not feeling comfortable. He pulled out very sore, so there is obviously an issue with the shoes that he is wearing. It’s a bit like a fella running in a sprint with spikes on him and the fella alongside running with slippers on. He is a front-wheel-drive horse–he works from the front. We think there is an issue there and especially when he was so sore.”

I hope O'Brien can find the right shoe style for the colt. Coolmore can spend millions on their horses, but throwing money at this won't make the difference; they need a farrier who can find the right solution for this valuable colt.
IMO, the work of a really good farrier is essential in keeping really good racehorses sound and successful. The best seem to combine science, experience, art and instinct to figure out what works for a particular horse...and every horse is different.
This year's Arc and Champions Day are now 20 days apart, instead of just two weeks. That will be good for boosting the fields of both race meets, and could enable us to see a match-up between Enable and top males like Almanzor.
The down side of this calendar change is that there will now be only two weeks between Champions Day at Ascot and the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. I fear this could mean fewer top Euros coming to the BC this year.

Winx Wins Randwick Trial
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/wi ... L4.twitterAustralian Horse of the Year Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) worked successfully at Randwick Tuesday morning when winning a 1000-metre barrier trial (video), reported racenet.com.au. It was the 6-year-old’s 16th barrier trial and first win. She covered the distance in :59.98 over soft (5) ground with Hugh Bowman in the irons. The Chris Waller trainee was followed by ‘TDN Rising Star’ and GSW and G1SP Pariah (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in second, with MGSW and G1 Doncaster Mile runner-up Happy Clapper (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) taking third.
“I guess winning the trial is unusual for her,” Waller told racenet.com.au. “Both Hugh and I thought she might be doing a little bit too well at this stage of her preparation and just needed a stronger hit-out than normal because she’s a bit heavier than what she normally is. So with today’s trial, I think she’s right on track.”
Winx is scheduled to kick off her season in the G2 Warwick S. over 1400 metres at Randwick on Aug. 19, with a third consecutive A$3-million G1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) the long-term goal at Moonee Valley on Oct. 28.

Following Mendelssohn's maiden win earlier on the Curragh card, Sioux Nation took the G1 Phoenix.
Their wins follow Dacita's impressive victory in the G1 Beverly D. yesterday at Arlington.
All three are by the late Scat Daddy.
Even though his life was tragically cut short, IMHO he may turn out to be one of the best turf sires we've seen. What a loss.

2016 European champion Almanzor finished last in his 4yo debut in a G3 at Deauville today. He probably needed the race, but last?

Yes, and there's Lady Aurelia and Con Te Partiro, too. . . pretty amazing.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Following Mendelssohn's maiden win earlier on the Curragh card, Sioux Nation took the G1 Phoenix.

Great racing this week, as York's Ebor Festival gets underway on Wednesday. The feature on the first day is the 1m2½f, G1 Juddmonte International Stakes, which has horses like Barney Roy, Churchill, Cliffs of Moher, Deauville, So MI Dar and Ulysses listed as entered. Goes off 7:35 AM Pacific/10:35 AM Eastern.

Thursday's headliner is the 1m4f, G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks (for F&M, not just 3yo), where we could see Enable taken on by Journey, Nezwaah and Queen's Trust. Also at 7:35 AM Pacific/10:35 AM Eastern.

For me, FRIDAY is the day for which I have to rise at dawn. It's the 5f, G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, featuring the American pocket rocket, Lady Aurelia. She may be facing a strong challenger in Battaash, who is in beastly-good form right now. Same time.
https://www.racingpost.com/racecards/10 ... -25/678373
Saturday has a G2 for 2yo colts and geldings, the 6f Gimcrack Stakes. I'm seeing names like Sioux Nation, who just won at the Curragh, and Declarationofpeace, who ran in the same race and never threatened. I don't know if these colts will be running back so quickly. The entry list is long, and I expect that it will change over the next few days. 7:00 AM Pacific.
