Well yeah, without watching every workout, it’s hard to know. All I can do is work with what I’ve seen. However, I hear tell there’s always one in the Baffert barn that hasn’t been in yet that is the best of them all. I used to take that with a grain of salt. I’ve since bought stock in Morton’s.

Pletcher wasn't afraid to say they were "disappointed in the outcome". His comments come toward the very end of the article.Tessablue wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 1:39 am Fierceness had a far worse trip than the winner, who could not have had an easier time of it, but he really should have been good enough there. Sometimes horses run hot-and-cold at Gulfstream, but he seems to be a horse who really needs things to go his way.

We kind of put stock in the Derby winner being the “one”, but lately it’s just been the horse who ran best/had the best trip that day. It’s still fun to follow up to the race, but I am more excited about the Travers and when they face the older boys.Curtis wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 7:33 pmWell yeah, without watching every workout, it’s hard to know. Face the older boys……You mean the Breeder’s Cup Classic? I guess the Pacific Classic had a couple of 3yo’s.Izvestia wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 9:39 pmWe kind of put stock in the Derby winner being the “one”, but lately it’s just been the horse who ran best/had the best trip that day. I think that one this year was Maymun. And what happened to Prince of Monaco since his no-show in the BCJ?Curtis wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 7:33 pmWell yeah, without watching every workout, it’s hard to know. I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

I'm kinda surprised that the name Hades wasn't already taken by a horse from the 20th century and/or is on the protected list.
Shhh we aren't supposed to point this out.

Or how develop as four year olds, but nowadays it’s to the shed before they risk losing a raceIzvestia wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 9:39 pmWe kind of put stock in the Derby winner being the “one”, but lately it’s just been the horse who ran best/had the best trip that day. It's fair to point it out, but it isn't quite as fair to act as if no other trainer has had a maiden winner disappear.

The thing is - if you let them develop, you could get a Gun Runner or White Abarrio!!! Both solid 3-year-olds, maybe not the best at 3 but not terrible, but developed into fabulous older horses.
On the flip side - the best 2-year-olds don’t always develop past 2 to 3. Depends on so many things. Some trainers have a knack for longevity, and developing horses at their own pace. It also depends on ownership.

I don't think its any different now. There have always been hype horses that don't pan out, horses that get injured on the Derby trail, horses that don't improve from 2 to 3, etc. Its all trainers too. Some of the things that changed are EVERYONE wants to go to the Derby(past 20 years) and the points system forces horses to have to run in certain races vs just Graded earnings from any Graded/Group Stakes.
