Its a great read. Came out a few days ago, to be before the Japan Cup but I didn't see it in time. Last US winner of the Japan Cup in 1991 and he sounds like quite the character.

Thanks so much for sharing!!!
I do remember Golden Pheasant's victory in the 1991 Japan Cup at which Japanese icon & Hall of Famer Mejiro McQueen(JPN) finished fourth.
But I had never seen the race video in English posted in this article before.
Let me add some picks of his that were taken by Mr Masumi Mogami when the son of Caro had workouts at Tokyo accompanied by groom Charles Clay and exercise rider Lisa Martin.
Then it was off to Japan, accompanied by groom Charles Clay and exercise rider Lisa Martin. Clay also was the man at the shank for Whittingham’s 1989 Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, who by then had settled into his Japanese stallion career.

Thanks for sharing that. (And thanks to Tachyon for the photos.) I knew of Golden Pheasant but I didn't know much about him aside from being a Japan Cup winner. He does sound very quirky and like quite the character. Really enjoyable read, especially about the trip to Japan and leading up to the Cup.

Thank you for sharing this most fascinating story of a horse I was not familiar with. Jay Hovdey sure knows how to tell a story! A very quirky horse---- but charming and delightful to read about.Flanders wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2023 3:12 am Its a great read. That was right near the end of Charlie Whittingham being a major player. Golden Pheasant had serious turn of foot. They’re all quirky but on his day, he was something else.
