Right horse, wrong year. Citation in 1951. Noor won the race in 1950.

My guess would be Sir Barton and Seattle Slew.

Sir Barton because the races weren't considered the Triple Crown until long after he retired.

Seattle Slew because his sire died young.

I read a lot and like researching pedigrees. It was an educated guess. It came down to 3 horses in my mind, I had actually typed Sir Barton and Omaha, then I thought, oh wait Bold Reasoning died after only 3 crops.

Forego is a good guess but not the horse that did that.
BTW I'm old,but not ancient! It was in the very early 80s in NY

Well I was banking on it being the Jockey Club Gold Cup, since it used to be 2 miles but was run at 12f in the 80s. I'll have to think more.
