Thought it might be him. His name shows up fairly often as someone dumping TBs at low-end auctions. He really doesn't even pretend to give a damn.

Thanks for doing the research!

And the merry-go-round that is Antonio Soto's barn spins once again. This is 8yo Everynow and Then; last raced at Los Al 10/27/13, now at Mike's Auction

There are several other TBs on the lot at Mike's tonight. IDing them is hard. Some older broodmares; a 4yo filly w/o tattoo; a 3yo filly tentatively ID'd as First Fair Lady. If that is accurate, she last ran at Los Al on 10/19/13.

The epitome of depressed. Unraced 2yo colt, Drop a Member. At Mike's Auction. Listed on Equineline, but not on Equibase. But is wearing racing plates.

Will the breeder contribute to his rescue and retraining? Or the breeders of any of these animals? Are they aware?

Some definitely do, as do some former owners and trainers. Unfortunately, in an auction setting, time is of the essence, and getting hold of these people is time-consuming.

Also, even for former connections who want to keep track, it is difficult to track a filly or mare once she has joined the broodmare ranks.

Pitiful photo of a 3yo filly believed to be First Fair Lady. She raced twice, the last time on 10/19, at Los Al, of course.

Oh, geez, I wish there were something we could do about this BEFORE they get to auction. Having to sort through horses on the auction lot to find the TBs just seems so wrong, especially the ones who have recently raced. It seems like such a waste of precious resources! I'm pretty sure there are models out there where the rescues work directly at the track to retrieve horses that trainers/owners want to surrender. Why is that not working? I wrote to the CHRB about the last Soto dump-off, of course got no response. Where does the blame belong, apart from the a-holes who do the dumping? What can racing fans do to change this disgusting evil side of the sport I've loved since I was 4 years old???

It's been a very expensive month for Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, as Caroline notes below.

2yo "Lucky", who as far as we can decipher was used for tripping practice by a bunch of drunk guys and ran through a fence as a result, would like to thank everyone that has donated to support his veterinary and rehab costs. His ankle injury continues to improve with daily penicillin flushing, and his chest wound is barely visible. The last month's vet and medication bills have been, let's say, extraordinary. Della (Cymple Rhythym) and Lucky have been in intensive rehab, Pirate (Piratesdragon) came up very lame and has been finally diagnosed with a deep foot abscess (hopefully that will now resolve and allow him to go back into training shortly), and Flash (We Will Prevail) has been diagnosed with a small but nonetheless cancerous growth on his neck which has so far refused to respond to treatment. If anyone can help a little with the month's expenses we would so appreciate your support. All donations are tax deductible (our tax ID is 26-3166279) and can be made through our website at any paypal link here www.sctbrescue.org Thank you!

So if you've ever thought of donating and haven't gotten around to it yet, or have a few extra bucks this month, you know the folks at SCTR will put it to good use.

Seriously? :( I used to go visit this girl at Mira Loma TB Farm. She's a half-sister to G1 winner Debonair Joe. I really hope they're able to buy her.

When people take their animals to these auctions, are they culling--reducing numbers--or trying to raise money?

From Auction Horses Rescue:

"Huge thank you to Burt Bacharach and wife Jane for contacting us at such a late hour tonight, willing to rescue hip 99, the El Prado mare "Bruheria," despite not owning her for 9 years now.

Also rescued tonight were the paint mare and foal, as well as hip 52 "Everynow And Then," just two weeks since his last race at Los Alamitos, Hip 71 "First Fair Lady" also just weeks off Los Alamitos, Hip 66 "Drop A Member" the 2 yo colt found with racing plates, Hip 79 the paint gelding, Hip 83 one of the abandoned broodmares, and Hip 114 and 115 the polo-bred fillies by Open Guillermo. Almost all will be available for adoption

Also, thank you to follower Sharon for rescuing one of the abandoned broodmares, hip 82. The rest of the broodmares sold to the meat buyer... "

It sounds like she went to the meat man. Anybody's guess whether she already shipped out or is held on the feedlot for the next truck.

Error here. Jenny Earhart just posted that she bought #84, an unidentified, untattooed TB mare.

Ugh. :( That's the one time I wish I still lived in Mira Loma and could have done something. I wonder what she sold for.

All of the above. For some it's an easy way to dump a horse off the feed bill, for others it's a desperate last resort, for some it's just the place where they buy and sell horses. I had a lot of friends who bought their horses at Mikes.

That band of older broodmares all came in together, so that was likely a cull. As best I can tell, 5 of them were sold to a KB.

A very happy and improving Boston Baked Bean at his new home at Hallmarc in KY. Photo by Paul Rutherford, a big donor to his bail and transport to his new home, who went to visit him yesterday. What they learned yesterday is that Bean has a definite opinion about peppermints: He doesn't like them. ;-)
